SA9140E Torque Angle Gage

Front Wheel Alignment Procedure

Caution: Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in the Preface section.

    Object Number: 891542 Size: SH

Important: The rear wheel alignment angles must be set to correct specifications before the front wheel alignment angles are adjusted.

  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies.

  3. Object Number: 891540 Size: SH
  4. Remove the 2 strut to knuckle nuts and bolts and discard them.

  5. Object Number: 861569 Size: SH

Important: The strut mounting bracket consists of 2 layers of metal, an inner layer and an outer layer. The inner layer has a rough 14.4-14.8 mm (0.57-0.58 in) hole through it at the mounting locations, while the outer layer has a 18.4-18.8 mm (0.72-0.74 in) slot through it.

  6. Using a round file or grinder, remove material from the inner layer of the strut bracket lower hole. The round hole may be increased to the size and shape of the slot in the outer layer. Do this on both sides of the strut bracket.
  7. • To increase negative camber, remove material from the outside of the lower strut hole.
    • To decrease negative camber, remove material from the inside of the lower strut hole.

    Object Number: 891540 Size: SH

Important: If the strut was filed or ground, paint the exposed metal with primer.

  8. Position the knuckle back into the strut and install the new nuts and bolts.
  9. Tighten the strut to knuckle fasteners.
  10. Using SA9140E , hold the bolt and tighten the nut.

    Tighten

    1. Tighten the front strut-to-knuckle -- initial torque to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
    2. Tighten the front strut-to-knuckle -- final torque to 100 N·m (73 lb ft) + 30-45 degrees.

Notice: Before installing wheels, remove rust or corrosion from wheel mounting surfaces and brake rotors/drums. Failure to do so can cause wheel nuts to loosen in service.

  11. Position the wheel onto hub.
  12. Install the wheel bolts and tighten them in a crisscross pattern.
  13. • Hand tighten all five wheel bolts.
    • Use a torque wrench to tighten the wheel bolts using a crisscross pattern.

    Tighten
Tighten the wheel bolts -- initial torque to 63 N·m (46 lb ft).

    • Use a torque wrench to final tighten the wheel bolts using a crisscross pattern.

    Tighten
Tighten the wheel bolts -- final torque to 125 N·m (92 lb ft).

  14. Lower the vehicle from the hoist.
  15. Inspect the camber angle and adjust if necessary.
