Power Steering Pump Replacement L81

Tools Required

    • SA9162C-2 Pulley Replacer
    • SA9218NE Power Steering Hub Remover

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.

  2. Object Number: 895973  Size: SH
  3. Unsnap the evaporative emission (EVAP) purge valve assembly and secure it out of the way of the air cleaner assembly.

  4. Object Number: 894282  Size: SH
  5. Remove the air cleaner lid.
  6. 3.1. Loosen the hose clamp at the throttle body.
    3.2. Slide off the flexible mass air flow (MAF) hose-to-throttle body hose.
    3.3. Unclamp the air cleaner lid.
    3.4. Remove the air cleaner lid, MAF sensor, and hose as an assembly.
  7. Remove the air cleaner from the air box.

  9. Remove the air box mount bolt.
  10. Remove the air box.

  11. Object Number: 891786  Size: SH
  12. Remove the power steering pump pulley bolts.

  13. Object Number: 894336  Size: SH
  14. Relieve the spring tension from the accessory drive belt and remove the belt from the power steering pump pulley.
  15. Remove the pulley.

  16. Object Number: 891789  Size: SH
  17. Place an approved drain container under the power steering pump.
  18. Remove the power steering pump pressure and return hoses and allow the system to drain.

  19. Object Number: 891791  Size: SH
  20. Remove the power steering pump to bracket attachment fasteners.
  21. Remove the pump from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 891652  Size: SH
  1. Position the power steering pump into the vehicle.
  2. Important: Do not tighten any bolts until all bolts have been started.

  3. Install the power steering pump-to-bracket bolts and tighten.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering pump-to-bracket bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  5. Inspect the O-ring seal on the pressure hose and replace if necessary. Install the pressure and return hoses.

  6. Object Number: 891786  Size: SH
  7. Install the pump pulley and hand tighten the bolts only.

  8. Object Number: 895973  Size: SH
  9. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  10. 5.1. Install the air box. Ensure that the lower pin engages into the rubber mount grommet and that the lower duct fits into the resonator.
    5.2. Install the air box mount bolt.
    5.3. Install the air cleaner.

  11. Install the air cleaner lid. Ensure that the lid hinge is fully engaged in the air box slots or the lid may not properly seal.
  12. Slide the flexible hose and the hose clamp on the throttle body.
  13. Tighten the hose clamp.

  14. Object Number: 894280  Size: SH
  15. Install the EVAP purge valve assembly.

  16. Object Number: 894282  Size: SH
  17. Connect the MAF electrical connection.
  18. Fill the power steering pump fluid reservoir with clean power steering fluid GM P/N 9985010.
  19. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .

Power Steering Pump Replacement L61

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 891755  Size: SH
  1. Remove the power steering pump reservoir fill cap.
  2. Place an approved drain container under the power steering hoses at the steering gear.
  3. Important: After removing the power steering hoses from the gear, do not rotate the steering wheel since fluid will be forced out of the gear.

  4. Remove the power steering hoses from the steering gear and allow the system to drain.

  6. Remove the pressure and return hoses at the power steering pump.

  7. Object Number: 891795  Size: SH
  8. Remove the power steering pump to cylinder head attachment fasteners.
  9. Remove the pump from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 891795  Size: SH
  1. Install the power steering pump onto the engine.
  2. Install the power steering pump to cylinder head attachment fasteners.
  3. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering pump-to-engine (L61) to 25 N·m (18 lb ft)


    Object Number: 891794  Size: SH
  4. Install the high pressure and return hoses to power steering pump.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering high pressure line-to-pump (L61) to 27 N·m (20 lb ft)


    Object Number: 891755  Size: SH
  6. Install the high pressure and return hoses to steering gear.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering lines-to-steering gear (L61) to 27 N·m (20 lb ft)

  8. Fill the power steering pump fluid reservoir with clean power steering fluid GM P/N 9985010.
  9. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding
