    • J 44015 Steering Linkage Installer
    • SA91100C Tie Rod Separator

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 854976  Size: SH
  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Loosen the outer tie rod to inner tie rod jam nut.
  4. Remove the tie rod end torque prevailing nut and discard the nut.
  5. Notice: Do not attempt to separate the joint using a wedge-type tool because seal may be damaged.

  6. Using the SA91100C , separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  7. Unthread the outer tie rod from the inner tie rod and remove it from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Thread the outer tie rod onto the inner tie rod.

  2. Object Number: 891579  Size: SH

    Important: The tie rod ends must be thoroughly cleaned before installing and tightening.

  3. Install the tie rod end into the steering knuckle.
  4. Using the J 44015 , seat the tie rod end into the knuckle and tighten.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the tie rod end linkage installer to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

    Notice: Hold the ball stud from turning when removing/installing the nut. The boot can become torn and damaged if the ball stud turns.

    Important: Use a new nut. The torque retention of the old nut may not be sufficient.

  6. Inspect the boot for damage and replace the part if damaged.
  7. Remove the J 44015 and install a NEW tie rod end nut and tighten.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the tie rod end-to-steering knuckle Nut to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

  9. Hand tighten the inner tie rod-to-outer tie rod jam nut.
  10. Notice: Before installing wheels, remove rust or corrosion from wheel mounting surfaces and brake rotors/drums. Failure to do so can cause wheel nuts to loosen in service.

  11. Install the wheel and tire assemblies
  12. Install the wheel bolts and tighten in a crisscross pattern.
  13. • Hand tighten all 5 wheel bolts.
    • Use a torque wrench to tighten the wheel bolts using a crisscross pattern.

    Tighten
    Tighten the wheel bolts -- initial torque to 63 N·m (46 lb ft).

    • Use a torque wrench to final tighten the wheel bolts using a crisscross pattern.

    Tighten
    Tighten the wheel bolts -- final torque to 125 N·m (92 lb ft).

  14. Set the toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment in Wheel Alignment.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
