SA9218NE Power Steering
Hub Remover
- Using the SA9218NE
or equivalent
, remove the hub.
- Remove the retaining ring.
• | If difficulty is encountered, use a C-clamp, one side on the end cover
and the other side on the pump drive shaft, to depress the end cover, easing removal
of the retaining ring. Make sure to insert a piece of wood, or other protective material,
between the C-clamp and pump drive shaft. |
• | Place a punch into the pump housing access hole and remove the retaining
ring. |
- Gently push or tap on the drive shaft to assist in removing the end cover.
- Remove the following internal pump parts, in two groups:
• | Group 1: End cover, O-ring, pressure plate spring, and pressure plate. |
• | Group 2: Drive shaft with pump rotor, pump vanes, pump ring, thrust plate,
and shaft retaining ring. |
- Remove the following parts from the pump housing:
• | The dowel pins from the pump housing |
- Remove the pressure plate, pressure plate spring, and O-ring from the end cover.
- Remove the shaft retaining ring from the drive shaft and discard it.
- Remove the pump rotor, pump vanes, and thrust plate from the drive shaft.
- Separate the pump rotor, pump vanes, and pump ring.
- Clean all parts in power steering fluid GM P/N 9985010 and
dry.
Important:
• | Replace any damaged components. Do not attempt to remove the damage with
abrasive cleaners. |
• | A wavy pattern on the pump ring face will be present with low mileage
and should not be mistaken for premature wear. |
- Inspect the pump ring, pump vanes, thrust plate, and drive shaft for scoring,
pitting, or chatter marks.

- Remove the power steering pump from the vehicle, as previously outlined.
- Remove the reservoir retaining clips from the reservoir assembly.
- Remove the reservoir from the housing.
- Remove the O-ring seal from the pump housing.
- Remove the retaining ring.

• | Place a punch into the pump housing access hole and remove the retaining
ring. |
- Gently push or tap on the drive shaft to assist in removing the end cover.
- Remove the following internal parts in two groups:
• | Group 1: The end cover, the O-ring, the pressure plate spring, the pressure
plate. |
• | Group 2: The drive shaft with pump rotor, the pump vanes, the pump ring,
the thrust plate, and the shaft retaining ring. |
- Remove the following parts from the pump housing:
• | The dowel pins from the pump housing |
- Remove the pressure plate, pressure plate spring, and O-ring from the end cover.
- Remove the shaft retaining ring from the drive shaft and discard the ring.
- Remove the pump rotor, pump vanes, pump rings, and thrust plate from the
drive shaft.
- Separate the pump rotor, pump vanes, and pump ring.
- Clean all parts in power steering fluid GM P/N 995010 and
dry.
