    • J 22610 Clamp Pliers

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 854976  Size: SH
  1. Raise the vehicle on hoist.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Loosen the outer tie rod-to-inner tie rod jam nut.
  4. Remove the tie rod end-to-knuckle nut and discard the nut.
  5. Notice: Do not attempt to separate the joint using a wedge-type tool because seal may be damaged.

  6. Using the SA91100C , separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  7. Unthread the outer tie rod from the inner tie rod and remove it from the vehicle.
  8. Remove the inner tie rod to outer tie rod jam nut.

  9. Object Number: 891777  Size: SH
  10. Remove the boot clamp on the tie rod end.
  11. Remove the boot clamp on the steering gear housing end with cutters and discard.
  12. Remove the steering gear boot from the steering gear.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 892948  Size: SH
  1. Install the new boot clamp onto the steering gear boot at the steering gear housing end.
  2. Apply the grease in the service kit to the locations shown in the illustration prior to boot installation. This grease provides a water barrier and must be used to protect the internal gear components from corrosion.

  3. Object Number: 862226  Size: SH
  4. Install the boot onto the inner tie rod assembly. Slide the boot along the rod assembly until the large end of the boot is seated in the steering gear housing groove.
  5. Using the J 22610 crimp the clamp on the housing end of the boot.
  6. Install clamp on inner tie rod end of boot.

  8. Install the inner tie rod to outer tie rod jam nut.

  9. Object Number: 854987  Size: SH
  10. Thread the outer tie rod onto the inner tie rod.
  11. Important: The tie rod ends must be thoroughly cleaned before installing and tightening.

  12. Install the tie rod end into the steering knuckle.
  13. Using the J 44015 , seat the tie rod end into the knuckle and tighten.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the tie rod end linkage installer to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

    Important: Use a new nut. The torque retention of the old nut may not be sufficient.

  15. Remove the linkage installer and install the new tie rod end nut and tighten.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the tie rod end-to-steering knuckle nut to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  17. Hand tighten the inner tie rod-to-outer tie rod jam nut.
  18. Important: Before installing the wheels, remove rust or corrosion from the wheel mounting surfaces and brake rotors. Failure to do so can cause wheel bolts to loosen in service.

  19. Install the wheel and tire assemblies.
  20. Install the wheel bolts and tighten in a crisscross pattern.
  21. • Hand tighten all 5 wheel bolts.
    • Use a torque wrench to tighten the wheel bolts using a crisscross pattern.

    Tighten
    Tighten the wheel nuts -- initial torque to 63 N·m (46 lb ft).

  22. Use a torque wrench to final tighten the wheel bolts using a crisscross pattern.
  23. Tighten
    Tighten the wheel nuts -- final torque to 125 N·m (92 lb ft).

  24. Set the toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment in Wheel Alignment.
  25. Lower the vehicle from the hoist.
