When to Check Power Steering Fluid

Object Number: 1558474 Size: B3

It is not necessary to regularly check power steering fluid unless you suspect there is a leak in the system or you hear an unusual noise. A fluid loss in this system could indicate a problem. Have the system inspected and repaired.

How to Check Power Steering Fluid (2.2L L4 Engine)

The power steering fluid reservoir is translucent with fluid level markings on the outside. There's no need to remove the cap unless it is necessary to add fluid.

The level should be at the "COLD" mark when the engine compartment is cool. If the fluid level is below the "COLD" mark, add only enough fluid to bring the level up to the "COLD" mark.

It is normal for the power steering fluid level to change as the fluid warms or cools. When the engine compartment is hot, the level should be at or slightly above the "HOT" mark. The fluid level may be above "HOT" mark when the engine is hot -- this doesn't mean the reservoir is overfilled. If the fluid level is below the "HOT" mark, add only enough fluid to bring the level up to the "HOT" mark.

How to Check Power Steering Fluid (3.0L V6 Engine)

The power steering fluid reservoir is translucent with fluid level markings on the outside. There's no need to remove the cap unless it is necessary to add fluid.

The level should be at or above the "MIN" mark when the engine compartment is cool. If the fluid level is below the "MIN" mark, add only enough fluid to bring the level up to the "MIN" mark.

It is normal for the power steering fluid level to change as the fluid warms or cools. When the engine compartment is hot, the level should be at or slightly above the "MAX" mark. The fluid level may be above "MAX" mark when the engine is hot -- this doesn't mean the reservoir is overfilled. If the fluid level is below the "MAX" mark, add only enough fluid to bring the level up to the "MAX" mark.

How to Check Power Steering Fluid (2.2L L4 Engine and 3.0L V6 Engine)

If the fluid level is below the "COLD" (2.2L L4 engine) or "MIN (3.0L V6 engine) mark when the engine is cold, add power steering fluid that meets GM specification 9985010. When the engine is hot, if the fluid level is below the "HOT" (2.2L L4 engine) or "MAX" (3.0L V6 engine) mark, add power steering fluid that meets the same specification. GM part No. 1052884 (16 oz. or .47 L) GM part No. 1050017 (32 oz. or .946 L), and Saturn Part No. 21007583 (16 oz. or .47 L) all meet GM specification 9985010.

Always use the proper fluid. Failure to use the proper fluid can cause leaks and damage hoses and seals. The repairs would not be covered by your vehicle warranty. Add fluid in small amounts, continually checking the level, until you reach the "COLD" or 'MIN" mark (cold engine) or "HOT" or "MAX" mark (hot engine). Do not overfill.

When you are finished, replace the reservoir cap and tighten it completely. Be sure to wipe any excess power steering fluid from the top and sides of the reservoir.

What to Use

When you need windshield or rear window (wagon models) washer fluid (Saturn P/N 01051515), be sure to read the instructions before use. If you will be operating your vehicle in an area where that has sufficient protection against freezing.
