Rattle Noise From Rear of Vehicle While Driving

Subject:Rattle Noise From Rear of Vehicle While Driving (Inspect Both Sides of Vehicle for Broken Retaining Spring (Anti-rattle Spring) in Rear Brake Caliper)

Models:2002 Saturn L-Series vehicles equipped with rear antilock disc brakes (RPO JL9)

Condition

Some customers may comment of a rattle noise coming from the rear of vehicle while driving. Noise may not be present while braking.

Cause

This condition may be caused by a weak or broken retaining spring (anti-rattle spring) in the rear brake caliper.

Correction

Replace retaining spring in rear brake caliper on both sides of vehicle.

Procedure

  1. Test drive vehicle and verify rattle noise is coming from rear of vehicle with brakes not applied.
  2. Caution: Make sure vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned on the hoist. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which components are being removed.

  3. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  4. Remove both rear wheel and tire assemblies.
  5. Inspect retaining spring on caliper (both sides).
  6. • If retaining spring is cracked or broken, proceed to step 5.
    • If retaining spring is not cracked or broken, refer to "Diagnostics" in the Mechanical Brakes section of the 2002 L-Series Brakes Service Manual.
  7. Drive out brake pad retaining pins from outside-to-inside, remove pins and retaining springs.
  8. Inspect brake pad retaining pins for deterioration or damage. If damaged, replace.
  9. Apply small amount of silicone grease to retaining pins.
  10. Important: Check to ensure brake pads move freely in guide.

  11. Install new brake pad retaining spring on both sides of vehicle.
  12. Install brake pad retaining pins by driving them from inside outward.
  13. Notice: Before installing wheels, remove rust or corrosion from wheel mounting surfaces and brake rotors. Failure to do so can cause wheel bolts to loosen in service.

  14. Position wheel and tire assembly onto hub.
  15. Install wheel bolts and tighten in a crisscross pattern.
  16. 11.1. Hand tighten all five wheel bolts.

    Tighten
Wheel Bolts (Initial Torque) 63 N·m (46 lb ft)

11.2. Use a torque wrench to tighten wheel bolts using a crisscross pattern.

    Tighten
Wheel Bolts (Final Torque) 63 N·m (46 lb ft)

  17. Lower vehicle.
  18. Caution: If this operation is not carried out, brakes will not operate properly during initial brake applications.

  19. Prior to operating vehicle, depress brake a few times until brake pads are seated against rotor.
  20. Test drive vehicle to verify repair.
