Powertrain Control Module Replacement for Saturn L200/LW200 2003
Removal Procedure
Important: It is necessary to record the remaining engine
oil life. If the replacement module is not programed with the remaining engine oil
life, the engine oil life will default to 100%. If the replacement module is not programmed
with the remaining engine oil life, the engine oil will need to be changed at 5000 km
(3,000 mi) from the last engine oil change.
- Using a scan tool, retrieve the percentage of remaining engine oil. Record the
remaining engine oil life.
- Record
the preset radio stations.
- Turn the ignition OFF.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Disconnect the powertrain control module (PCM) J1 and J2 harness
connectors.
- Release the 2 retaining clips on the forward edge of the PCM mounting
brackets.
- Remove the PCM by lifting forward edge of PCM and slide towards front
of vehicle.
Installation Procedure
- Slide the PCM into the rear lip of the PCM bracket.
- Push down on the PCM until the two retaining clips are secure.
- Connect the PCM J1 and J2 harness connectors.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
Tighten
Tighten the battery terminal bolts to 17 N·m
(13 lb ft).
Important: If a new PCM is being installed, it MUST
be reprogrammed with new software and calibrations. Refer to "Service Stall
System (SSS) User Guide" reprogramming procedures. The PCM may be damaged if
the reprogramming process is interrupted. Make sure the scan tool is connected securely
to the DLC and the vehicle battery has a sufficient charge.
Make sure
the new PCM has the correct VIN and vehicle options.
- Reprogram the PCM. Refer to "Service Stall System (SSS) User Guide"
for reprogramming procedures.
Important: The new PCM must learn the passlock password
from the PCM. When the PCM reprogram is completed, use the SSS to perform the Passlock
Relearn Procedure.
- Perform the Passlock Relearn Procedure using the SSS.
- Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds, then turn the ignition ON.
Important: Following the PCM reprogramming , the PCM
will have to learn the crankshaft notch variation for misfire diagnostics.
- Perform the crankshaft relearn procedure. Refer to
Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn
.
- Verify no DTCs exist. If one exists, refer to the specific diagnostic
in this section of the service manual.
- Reset the clock and preset radio stations.
