CONDITION
Saturn has decided to conduct a Voluntary Emission Recall involving certain 2003 VUE, 2004 ION and 2004 L-Series vehicles equipped with a 2.2L (L61) engine. Some of these vehicles may have been built with spark plugs that misfire. If a spark plug misfires, it could result in illumination of the Service Engine Soon Light/Check Engine Light and/or engine misfire and roughness.
CORRECTION
Retailers are to inspect the spark plug(s) and replace them if necessary.
Only selected 2003 and 2004 model year Saturn vehicles equipped with a 2.2L (L61) engine within the following VIN range will require this recall.

---|---|---|---|
2004 | ION | 4Z100063 | 4Z102733 |
2004 | L-Series | 4Y500157 | 4Y501842 |
2003 | VUE | 3S904092 | 3S909796 |
A VIN listing of the involved vehicles is included in this bulletin for your reference.
You must verify recall involvement through your AS400 system. It is important to note that recall claims will only be paid on involved vehicles.
A list of vehicles assigned to you (Facility VIN Listing), which our records indicate were shipped to you is included in the package.
The listing contains:
• | Complete vehicle identification number (VIN); and |
• | VINs of vehicles, which according to Saturn records are in retail stock. |
Those Retailers not involved initially in this recall will receive a message at the top of a blank Facility VIN Listing that states: NO VEHICLES ASSIGNED AT THIS TIME FOR RECALL 04-E-01.
All unsold vehicles in Retailers’ possession and subject to this recall must be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this recall bulletin before owners take possession of these vehicles.
Retailers are to service all vehicles subject to this recall through November 30, 2003.
In summary, whenever a vehicle subject to this recall enters your vehicle inventory prior to November 30, 2003, you must take the steps necessary to be sure the recall correction has been made before selling the vehicle.
A pre-shipment of spark plugs required to perform this recall will be automatically sent to you from Saturn Service Parts Operations (SSPO) based on the affected vehicle population at your retail facility.
Part Number | Description | Qty/ Vehicle |

Retailers will scrap all replaced parts in a manner that ensures that they cannot be reused, remanufactured, or otherwise entered into the stream of commerce in the future.
Important: There is a six-digit number stamped on each spark plug. The first three numbers of this six-digit number provide the date code.
• | If the date code on the cylinder number 1 spark plug is 154, 155, or 156, replace the spark plug. Remove and inspect the rest of the spark plugs. Replace remaining spark plugs that have a 154, 155, 156 date code. (Refer to the appropriate model year L-Series, VUE, or ION service manual for spark plug removal procedure.) |
• | If the date code on the cylinder number 1 spark plug is NOT 154, 155, or 156, the spark plugs are not involved in this recall. Reinstall the spark plug. (Refer to the appropriate model year L-Series, VUE, or ION service manual for spark plug installation procedure.) No further inspection is required. |
Upon completion of the recall, a Recall Identification Label and Clear Protective Cover should be affixed on a clean, dry surface of the radiator core support in an area clearly visible when the hood is raised. Each label provides a space to print in ink (or type) the recall number (04-E-01) and the five (5) digit facility code of the retailer performing the recall service.
As a reminder, additional labels may be ordered from Saturn publications (1-800-828-2112, prompt 3, Item Number S03 00013A for the Recall Identification Label, and item number S03 00013B for the Clear Protective Cover).
