The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

If a timing belt is to be installed on a 3.0 L81 engine the dealer will find that the timing marks are no longer on the belt.

As long as the camshafts and crankshaft are timed properly it is not necessary to have the belt marked but if the marks on the belt are preferred this is the procedure to have the marks in the correct location.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Lay new Timing Belt on the work bench in a similar shape as it is on the vehicle. Starting on the upper left hand side place a mark on the belt just to the left of a tooth. Any tooth it does not matter but be sure the mark is in the groove close to the tooth. Count in the direction of the arrows 15 teeth. In the groove just after tooth number 15 make your second mark.

Now count 61 teeth in the direction of the arrows. After tooth number 61 make another mark. Count in the direction of the arrows15 teeth and after tooth number 15 make mark number 4. Now you have marked the four cam gear locations. All that is left is the crank gear location. Count 64 teeth in the arrow direction and make your last mark. From this mark back to the starting point is 70 teeth. Now all the marks are own the belt and ready to begin by using eSI installation procedure.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
