Steel

Steel service replacement parts are painted with a high-bake factory primer. To duplicate the factory painted appearance, refinish all visible structural areas with 50 percent gloss black topcoat. For the proper adhesion of color coats in service, the following refinishing steps are necessary.

  1. Clean the part with a wax and grease removing solvent such as PPG D837, Acryli-Clean™ or equivalent.
  2. Scuff-sand the panel lightly with wet or dry #400 sandpaper and water. Avoid cut-throughs. Wipe the part clean. Apply Acrylic Sealer D825 or equivalent to the entire part.
  3. Apply the color and clear coats to the part.
  4. If the factory primer coat was cut through on a metal part, apply metal conditioner to the exposed bare metal. Follow the label directions.
  5. Apply PPG-D839 Urethane Primer Surfacer to the entire part; allow to dry thoroughly before sanding. Follow the label directions for drying time.
  6. Sand the primer surfacer using wet or dry #400 sandpaper and water.
  7. Important: Saturn service replacement doors are pre-painted with a 50 percent gloss black in the door header area.

  8. Apply the color and clear coats to the part.
