Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to SRS Sodium Hydroxide Powder Caution in the Preface section.

    Caution: Refer to SIR Inflator Module Handling and Storage Caution in the Preface section.

    Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.

    Important: In the event deployment has occurred, refer to Repairs and Inspections Required After a Collision .

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System .
  2. Remove the upper steering column trim cover. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  3. Turn the steering wheel to the 3 o'clock position.

  4. Object Number: 868896  Size: SH
  5. Insert the stubby flat bladed screwdriver into the triangle hole in the steering wheel rear cover.
  6. Turn the screwdriver to release the spring fastener while lifting on the corner of the bag closest to that fastener.
  7. Similarly release the next fastener.
  8. Turn the steering wheel to the 9 o'clock position.
  9. Release the remaining 2 fasteners.
  10. Disconnect the wiring and remove the SIR.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 868902  Size: SH
  1. Connect the wiring to the SIR.
  2. Align the SIR studs with holes in the steering wheel and press into position.
  3. Important: Press each corner of the SIR until all spring retainers snap into position.

  4. Install the upper steering column trim cover. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  5. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System .
