Squeal Noise Heard From Rear Disc Brake Calipers During First Few Normal Stops of the Day

Subject:Squeal Noise Heard From Rear Disc Brake Calipers During First Few Normal Stops of the Day (Replace Rear Brake Caliper Pistons Both Sides of Vehicle)

Models:2000-2001 L-Series vehicles built up to and including VIN 1Y526000 equipped with rear disc brakes (RPOs JL9/J65)



Condition

Some customers may comment that when they apply the brakes during the first few stops of the day, the vehicle exhibits a squeal noise. This squeal noise is heard coming from the rear of the vehicle.

Cause

This condition may be caused by noise being transmitted through the brake calipers when applied.

Correction

Replace rear brake calipers pistons with new phenolic pistons both sides of the vehicle. For piston removal and installation procedures, refer to "Rear Brake Caliper" in the Mechanical Brakes Section of the 2000/2001 L-Series Brakes Service Manual.

Notice: When replacing the brake caliper pistons, you must also replace the brake pads with pads specifically designed for use with phenolic pistons.
