Power Steering Pump Assemble L81
- Lubricate the new drive shaft seal with power steering fluid GM P/N 9985010.
- Install a new drive shaft seal into the pump housing using a suitably
sized socket as a driver.
- Install the thrust plate and pump rotor onto
the drive shaft.
- Install anew shaft retaining ring onto the drive shaft.
- Install the drive shaft, rotor, and thrust plate assemblies into the housing.
- Install the pump ring dowel pins into the pump
housing through the thrust plate.
Important: The pump ring face has an indentation on one side near the dowel hole. The ring
must be installed with the indentation facing up. If the ring is installed upside
down, the pump will not function.
- Install the pump ring, with the holes correctly positioned onto the dowel pins,
into the housing.
- Install the vanes into the pump rotor. Vanes have a radius at both ends
and may be installed in either direction.
- Lubricate the new pump housing O-ring with power steering fluid and install
it into the groove in the housing.
- Align the pressure plate dowel holes with the dowel pins and install the
plate into the housing.
- Position the pressure plate spring against the pressure plate. The spring may
be installed in either orientation.
- Lubricate the new end cover O-ring with power steering fluid GM P/N 9985010
and install it onto the end cover.
- Lubricate the outer edge of the end cover with power steering fluid GM P/N 9985010.
- Press the end cover into the pump housing.
Important: Make sure the retaining ring is fully seated in the housing groove. If difficulty
is encountered, use a press as shown or a C-clamp, one side on the end cover, the
other on the pump drive shaft, to depress the end cover, easing installation to the
retaining ring. Make sure to insert a piece of wood or other protective material,
between the C-clamp and the pump drive shaft.
- Install the retaining ring into the groove in the pump housing, with the ring
opening near, but not across, the access hole in the housing.
- Install the pump pulley hub using the SA9162C-2
or equivalent.
