Subject: | Service Information Regarding New Design Line Pressure Control Solenoids |
Models: | 2000 - 2003 Saturn L-Series Vehicles |
The purpose of this bulletin is to provide service information about two different line pressure control solenoids used for service. When performing service on an L-Series that requires line pressure control solenoid replacement, the correct solenoid must be used for the specific model year and application. In 2000 - 2002 model year vehicles, the Delphi line pressure control solenoid is used and in 2003 model year vehicles the BOSCH line pressure control solenoid is used
NOTICE: The line pressure control solenoids are not interchangeable. Both solenoids will physically fit in the valve body and will connect electrically, therefore care must be taken to ensure the proper solenoid is used.
If the incorrect solenoid is installed, the shift characteristics of the transaxle will be affected without setting a diagnostic trouble code (DTC), If a BOSCH line pressure control solenoid is installed in a 2000 - 2002 model year vehicle, the transaxle will shift hard and erratically without adapting. Conversely, if a Delphi line pressure control solenoid is installed in a 2003 model year vehicle, the transaxle will have a soft, slipping feel that may result in transaxle damage prior to adapting.
The Delphi solenoid (1) can be identified by the part number and Julian date stamped on the back of the solenoid body. The BOSCH solenoid (2) can be identified by the name BOSCH molded in the plastic near the electrical connector. Refer to illustration below to determine which solenoid is being used.
IMPORTANT: When diagnosing a line pressure control solenoid, refer to the applicable model year Saturn L-Series Transaxle Service Manual for correct diagnostics and pressure versus amps chart. Do not use the previous year's pressure versus amps chart for the Delphi line pressure control solenoid since the charts are different.
