Inoperable Power Driver Seat (Repair Damage Wire, Replace Blown Fuse and/or Attach Seat Wiring to Seat Matte)

Subject:Inoperable Power Driver Seat (Repair Damaged Wire, Replace Blown Fuse and/or Attach Seat Wiring to Seat Matte)

Models:2002-2003 L-Series vehicles with Power Driver Seat (RPO AG1)

Attention: General Manager, Fixed Operations Manager, Technician


Condition:

Some customers may comment that the power driver seat is inoperable.

Cause:

Power seat recliner wires may come in contact with the edge of the seat frame near the recliner motor, and/or seat wiring may be pinched at the seat adjuster linkage.

Correction:

Inspect seat wiring. Add a piece of duct tape to the edge of the seatback frame directly behind the recliner motor. Repair damaged wire and replace blown fuse, if necessary. If wiring is pinched near seat adjuster linkage, inspect and repair pinched seat wiring and attach to the seat matte with two wire ties.

Service Procedure

  1. Remove driver seat from vehicle. Refer to "Front Seat Removal" procedure in the "Front Seat Removal" section of the 2002-2003 L-Series, Body Removal & Installation Service Manual, Vol. IV.
  2. Remove the front seat back frame, pad, and cover. Refer to the "Front Seat Back Frame/Pad/Cover Removal" section of the 2002-2003 L-Series, Body Removal & Installation Service Manual, Vol. IV.
  3. Inspect seat wiring.

       Caution: The seatback frame has a metal edge. To avoid personal injury, use care when applying tape to the edge of the seatback frame.

    • Add a piece of duct tape to the edge of the seatback frame directly behind the recliner motor. Repair the damaged seat wiring and replace the blown fuse, if necessary.

    • If seat wiring is pinched near the seat adjuster linkage:
       - Repair the damaged seat wiring and replace the blown fuse, if necessary.
       - Reroute the wiring.
       - Punch two holes into the cushion matte on the rubber backed portion of the matte, approximately 13 mm (0.5 in.) from the edge.
       - Attach the wiring to the seat cushion matte with two wire ties.
  5. Install the front seat back cover, pad, and frame. Refer to the "Front Seat Back Frame/Pad/Cover Installation" section of the 2002-2003 L-Series, Body Removal & Installation Service Manual, Vol. IV.
  6. Install the seat to the vehicle. Refer to "Front Seat Installation" procedure in the Front Seat Installation section of the 2002-2003 L-Series, Body Removal & Installation Service Manual, Vol. IV.
