Service Update for Inventory and Customer Vehicles - Memory Seat, Liftgate Switch, Intermediate Steering Shaft Boot Updates - Expires with Base Warranty

The claim information in this buleltin has changed for Saturn U.S. retailers. Saturn U.S. retailers should use a "VC" case type when submitting a claim. Please discard all copies of bulletin 07073, issued March 2007.

This service update includes vehicles in dealer/retailer inventory and customer vehicles that return for any type of service, and will expire at the end of the involved vehicle's New Vehicle Limited Warranty period.

This bulletin provides a service procedure to perform service updates on the liftgate switch, intermediate steering shaft boot, and if equipped, the driver memory seat.

This service procedure should be completed as soon as possible on involved vehicles currently in dealer/retailer inventory and customer vehicles that return to the dealer/retailer for any type of service during the New Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage period

A list of involved vehicles currently in dealer/retailer inventory is attached to the Administrative Message (GM and Saturn US) or Dealer Communication (Canada) used to release this bulletin. Customer vehicles that return for service, for any reason, and are still covered under the vehicle's base warranty, and are within the VIN breakpoints provided below, should be checked for vehicle eligibility in the appropriate system listed below.

Important: Dealers/retailers are to confirm vehicle eligibility prior to beginning repairs by using the system(s) below. Not all vehicles within the above breakpoints may be involved.

-- GM dealers and Canadian Saturn Saab retailers should use GMVIS.

-- US Saturn retailers should use the AS/400 system.

Parts required to complete this service update are to be obtained from General Motors Service Parts Operations (GMSPO). Please refer to your "involved vehicles listing" before ordering parts. Normal orders should be placed on a DRO = Daily Replenishment Order. In an emergency situation, parts should be ordered on a CSO = Customer Special Order.

Saturn will not be doing a pre-shipment of parts for this bulletin. Please place orders for the required parts as necessary. Order controls will be in place initially on part number 15934060 to allow only one piece per order.

Re-Route Driver Seat Memory Module Harness

Important: If the vehicle is equipped with a Power Driver with Memory Seat, continue with this service procedure. If the vehicle is not equipped with a Power Driver with Memory Seat, proceed to the next service procedure titled, Liftgate Touchpad Switch Functional Test.

Caution: When performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, the SIR system must be disabled. Failure to observe the correct procedure could cause deployment of the SIR components. Serious injury can occur. Failure to observe the correct procedure could also result in unnecessary SIR system repairs.

The inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) maintains a reserved energy supply. The reserved energy supply provides deployment power for the airbags if the SDM loses battery power during a collision. Deployment power is available for as much as 1 minute after disconnecting the vehicle power. Waiting 1 minute before working on the system after disabling the SIR system prevents deployment of the airbags from the reserved energy supply.

1. Remove the driver’s seat from the vehicle. Refer to Bucket Seat Replacement and SIR Disabling and Enabling in SI.
2. Place the seat on a work bench.






Important: The driver’s seat memory module wiring harness may be pinched or cut. Inspect the wire harness (1) at the probable pinch location, which is the inboard seat track (2). Repair the wire harness, if necessary.

3. Locate the seat memory module harness. The seat memory module harness is located near the inboard seat track and is attached to the seat memory module.



4. Route the seat memory module harness away from the inboard seat track. Tie strap the seat memory module harness approximately 50 mm (2 in) from the back of the connector (2). Apply the tie strap (1) at the wire harness "Y" location (3) as shown in the illustration.
5. Install the driver’s seat into the vehicle. Refer to Bucket Seat Replacement and SIR Disabling and Enabling in SI.
6. Turn the ignition to the ACC/ACCESSORY position and check the operation of the driver’s seat. Ensure that all of the power features are functioning properly.

Liftgate Touchpad Switch Functional Test

With vehicle in Park and all doors unlocked, open and close the liftgate three times by activating the exterior liftgate switch to check for the correct opening and closing of the liftgate. If equipped with the power liftgate option, ensure that the console liftgate switch is enabled.

-- If the liftgate opens and closes correctly, no further action is required for the liftgate upgrade. Proceed to the service procedure below titled, Lubricate Intermediate Steering Shaft (I-shaft) Bearing/Boot.

Important: The Liftgate Calibration Procedure must be used after replacing or repairing any portion of the liftgate assembly (1).

-- If the liftgate will not remain closed when the switch is not manually actuated, refer to Power Liftgate Inoperative in SI to verify that a new replacement liftgate switch is required. Replace the exterior liftgate switch (2), if required. Refer to the following documents in SI: Liftgate Latch Replacement and Liftgate Calibration Procedure and then proceed to the service procedure below titled, Lubricate Intermediate Steering Shaft (I shaft) Bearing/Boot.

Lubricate Intermediate Steering Shaft (I-shaft) Bearing/Boot

Lubricate the I-shaft bearing/boot with GM Superlube®, or equivalent, to relieve the friction between the boot and the carrier.

1. Remove the instrument panel insulator panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement in SI.

Direct the silicone spray around the outer diameter (OD) of the housing (1)




2. Apply GM Superlube®, or equivalent, to the I-shaft bearing/boot. Direct the silicone spray around the outer diameter of the housing (1), allowing it to seep between the boot and housing. Refer to the illustration.
3. Rotate or squeeze the boot after applying silicone spray to the I-shaft bearing/boot.
4. Install the instrument panel insulator panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement in SI.
