Condition

Some customers may comment on a power steering clunk or knock type noise while driving at slow speeds.

Cause

Based on recent information provided from the field, GM Engineering has determined the cause of this concern to be the intermediate shaft. Previous repair attempts may have temporarily corrected the customer's concern by moving the intermediate shaft enough to redistribute the grease on the shaft.

Correction

DO NOT REPLACE THE POWER STEERING GEAR.

A change has been made to the intermediate shaft design. Replace the intermediate shaft (I-shaft) according to the procedure listed in Service Information (SI).

Notice:  The front wheels of the vehicle must be maintained in the straight ahead position and the steering column must be in the LOCK position (use J-42640) before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft. Failure to follow these procedures will cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in damage to the SIR coil assembly.
