Removal Procedure
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the right side engine splash shield. Refer to
Engine Splash Shield Replacement
in Body Front End.
- Place the drain pan under the power steering pump and the power steering gear.
- Disconnect the return hose from the cooler pipe.
Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion
stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft.
This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal
injury.
- Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Refer to
Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement
in Steering Wheel and Column.
- Use a utility stand in order to support the frame rear.
- Remove the rear frame bolts.
- Use the utility stand to lower the rear of the frame for clearance.
- Remove the power steering gear heat shield and hose clip.
- Disconnect the cooler pipe from the steering gear.
- Remove the cooler pipe retainer bolt/screw.
- Remove the cooler pipe retainer.
- Remove the cooler pipe from the frame retainers and vehicle.
Installation Procedure
- Install the cooler pipe to the vehicle and the frame retainers.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the cooler pipe retainer to the frame.
Tighten
Tighten the cooler pipe retainer bolt/screw to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
- Connect the cooler pipe to the steering gear.
Tighten
Tighten the fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).
- Install the power steering gear hose clip.
- Connect the power steering return hose to the cooler pipe.
- Raise the frame rear position.
- Install the rear frame bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 165 N·m (122 lb ft).
- Remove the utility stand.
- Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering gear. Refer to
Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement
in Steering Wheel and Column.
- Install the right side engine splash shield. Refer to
Engine Splash Shield Replacement
in Body Front End.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Bleed the power steering system. Refer to
Power Steering System Bleeding
.
