Diagnostic Instructions

    • Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
    • Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
    •  Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

Circuit/System Description

The rear quarter windows are operated using the rear quarter window switch in the overhead console multifunction switch assembly. The rear quarter window switch is supplied power when the ignition is in RUN or retained accessory power (RAP) is enabled.

When the rear quarter window switch is activated to the Open position, battery positive voltage is applied to the rear quarter window actuators through the power quarter window motor open control circuit. Ground for the actuators is provided by the power quarter window motor close control circuit through the close side of the rear quarter window switch.

When the rear quarter window switch is activated to the Close position, battery positive voltage is applied to the rear quarter window actuators through the power quarter window motor close control circuit. Ground for the actuators is provided by the power quarter window motor open control circuit through the open side of the rear quarter window switch.

Circuit/System Verification

Ignition ON, command the rear quarter windows to OPEN and CLOSE by pressing the rear quarter window switch. Observe the operation of the rear quarter windows.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the C2 harness connector at the rear quarter window switch.
  2. Ignition OFF, test for less than 1 ohm of resistance between the ground circuit terminal B and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  4. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal E and ground.
  5. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit an open/high resistance. If the ELC fuse is open, test the circuit terminal E for a short to ground.
  6. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the rear quarter window switch
  7. Reconnect rear quarter window switch.
  8. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate rear quarter window actuator.
  9. Ignition OFF, test for less than 1 ohm of resistance between the control circuit terminal A and ground.
  10. If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If circuits test normal, replace the rear quarter window switch.
  11. Ignition OFF, test for less than 1 ohm of resistance between the control circuit terminal B and ground.
  12. If greater than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If circuits test normal, replace the rear quarter window switch.
  13. Connect a test lamp between control circuit terminal A and control circuit terminal B.
  14. Ignition ON, command the rear quarter window to OPEN and CLOSE by pressing the rear quarter window switch. The test lamp should turn ON when commanding the OPEN and CLOSE states.
  15. If the test lamp remains OFF during either of the commands, test for a short to ground on either control circuit. If the circuits test normal, replace the rear quarter window switch.
  16. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the appropriate rear quarter window actuator.

Component Testing

Rear Quarter Window Switch

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the rear quarter window switch.
  2. Test for infinite resistance between the signal terminals C and D and the B+ terminal E with the switch in the INACTIVE position.
  3. If less than infinite resistance, replace the rear quarter window switch.
  4. Test for less than 2 ohms of resistance between the signal terminal C and the B+ terminal E with the switch in the OPEN position.
  5. If greater than 2 ohms, replace the rear quarter window switch.
  6. Test for less than 2 ohms of resistance between the signal terminal D and the B+ terminal E with the switch in the CLOSE position.
  7. If greater than 2 ohms, replace the rear quarter window switch.

Rear Quarter Window Actuator

  1. Install a 15-amp fused jumper wire between the control terminal A and 12 volts. Momentarily install a jumper wire between the control terminal B and ground. The appropriate rear quarter window actuator should perform the OPEN/CLOSE function.
  2. If the function does not perform as specified, replace the appropriate rear quarter window actuator.
  3. Reverse the jumper wires; the appropriate rear quarter window actuator should perform the OPEN/CLOSE function.
  4. If the function does not perform as specified, replace the appropriate rear quarter window actuator.

Repair Instructions
