DTC Descriptors

DTC 1052: PPS Preload Failure Region 1

DTC 1053: PPS Preload Failure Region 2

DTC 1054: PPS Preload Failure Region 3

DTC 1055: PPS Preload Failure Region 4

Circuit/System Description

The passenger presence system (PPS) is divided up into 4 regions. When there is an unwanted force being applied to one or more PPS regions, the PPS will set a diagnostic trouble code (DTC). If the PPS detects any preload DTC within the PPS, it will communicate to the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) through a dedicated serial data circuit that a PPS fault is present. The SDM will set DTC B0081 indicating a problem within the PPS and will suppress the deployment of the instrument panel (I/P) module and illuminate the AIR BAG indicator.

Conditions for Running the DTC

Ignition voltage is between 9-16 volts.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

Object Number: 1573876 Size: SH

The PPS will set a DTC when a region has detected a preload/pressure on it, refer to chart below for specific region.

DTC

Preload Regions

DTC 1052

Region 1

DTC 1053

Region 2

DTC 1054

Region 3

DTC 1055

Region 4

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • The PPS will set a DTC for the appropriate region and communicate the fault to the SDM.
    • The SDM will set DTC B0081 and request the instrument panel cluster (IPC) to illuminate the AIR BAG indicator.
    • The PPS will illuminate the passenger air bag status OFF indicator.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The condition for setting the DTC no longer exists.
    • A history DTC will clear once 100 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.

Diagnostic Aids

    • When passenger seat bottom trim cover is serviced or removed, the trim cover, when reinstalled may apply certain unwanted pressure to the PPS causing DTCs 1052-1055 to set.
    • It may be necessary to perform the PPS preload test procedure more then once before replacing any parts.

Circuit/System Testing

Important: When removing connectors inspect for damage or corrosion. Damage or corrosion in the following requires repair or replacement of the affected.

   • PPS module
   • PPS module wiring harness

  1. Verify DTC 1051 is not set.
  2. If DTC 1051 is set, refer to DTC 1051.
  3. Verify that DTC 1052, 1053, 1054, or 1055 is not set.
  4. If any of the DTCs are set, perform Passenger Presence System Programming and Setup. If the DTC resets, replace the PPS.

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
