Rattle or Buzz Noise During Steady Throttle with Engine Speed Between 1500-2500 RPM

Subject:"Rattle" or "Buzz" Noise During Steady Throttle with Engine Speed Between 1500-2500 RPM (Install Heater Core Clamp Kit)

Models:1996-1998 Saturns built before and including VIN WZ252356


Condition

A rattle or buzz noise may be heard coming from the front of the vehicle with engine speed between 1500-2500 RPM.

Cause

The noise may be caused by the heater core pipes coming in contact with the inside of the heater and A/C module case, or in contact with the heater pipe opening on the engine side of the dash panel assembly.

Correction

Verify condition and if required, install heater core clamp kit.

Procedures

  1. Verify the rattle and buzz noise is coming from the heater core pipes, by duplicating the condition, according to the following steps:
    2. 1.1. Remove the front air inlet duct assembly and air cleaner assembly.
    1.2. Bring engine speed up to 1500-2500 RPM.
    1.3. Hold the heater core pipes stationary, on the engine side of the dash panel.
       • If the rattle or buzz noise does not go away, refer to the appropriate service manual for further diagnosis.
       • If the rattle or buzz noise goes away, install the heater core clamp kit using the following steps.

  2. Remove the screw and heater core side cover located above the accelerator pedal.

    3. Important: Heater core clamp kit contains the heater pipe clamp, fastener and the heater core retainer. The heater core retainer will not be needed for this bulletin.

  3. Install the heater core pipe clamp (P/N 21030351), to the heater core pipes using the fastener with the kit as shown in the illustration.

    4. Tighten
    Tighten to 2 N·m (16 lb in).

  4. Fasten the clamp to the inside of the heater and A/C module case using a screw (P/N 11515379).

    5. Tighten
    Tighten to 2 N·m (16 lb in).

  5. Verify the condition has been repaired.

  7. Install the front air inlet duct assembly and air cleaner assembly.

    • 21030351 Heater Core Clamp Kit (1 needed)
    • 11515379 Bolt/Screw - Flat Wa & Metric Hex Hd (50 per pack, 1 required)
