Bolt Torque Retention Compound for Brake Caliper Support Bracket to Steering Knuckle Bolt

Subject:Service Information on Bolt Torque Retention Compound for Brake Caliper Support Bracket to Steering Knuckle Bolt

Models:1991-1997 Saturns

Purpose

This bulletin contains information and a service procedure for installing caliper support bracket to steering knuckle bolts. The torque retention compound used on the brake caliper support bracket to steering knuckle bolts has been revised. Whenever these bolts are removed during service, they should be replaced using new second design bolts (P/N 21011110). These new second design bolts contain a revised pre-applied torque retention compound. If the new second design bolts are not available, the previously installed bolts (first of second design) may be cleaned, recoated with a torque retention compound, and reinstalled.

Refer to the following installation procedure for both the new second design and previously installed first and/or second design bolts.

Procedure

    Object Number: 859387 Size: SH
  1. Clean the mating surfaces of the caliper support bracket and steering knuckle, using a wire brush or wire wheel.
  2. If using existing bolts, thoroughly clean threads of previously installed bolts using a wire brush or wire wheel. Use Saturn Choke Aerosol Cleaner (P/N 21007127) or Saturn Brake and Choke Cleaner (P/N 21007432), or equivalent, to remove any remaining torque retention compound.
  3. If installing new second design bolts with pre-applied torque retention compound, proceed to step 4.

  4. Apply a high-temperature torque retention compound such as Loctite 272® Threadlocker or equivalent to the threads of the bolts. (Do not apply torque retention compound to new second design bolts, coated with a torque retention compound, that have never been installed.)
  5. Important: Bolt threads must be cleaned thoroughly prior to applying new torque retention compound.

Important: Do not over apply torque retention compound. Excess compound could be forced off the bolt threads and between the support bracket and steering knuckle during installation.

  6. Install bolts and tighten.
  7. Tighten
Tighten Brake Caliper Support Bracket to Steering Knuckle Bolt to: 110 N·m (81 lb ft)
