MIL (SERVICE ENGINE SOON LAMP) ON WITH ONLY DTC P0741 IN PCM

SUBJECT: MIL (SERVICE ENGINE SOON Lamp) On with Only DTC P0741 in PCM Memory ------------------------------------------------------------------- (Replace TCC Actuator or Input Shaft Converter O-Ring Seal) -----------------------------------------------------------

MODELS AFFECTED: 1996 - 1997 Saturns equipped with MP6/MP7 automatic transaxles

CONDITION: The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) (SERVICE ENGINE SOON telltale lamp) On with only DTC P0741 (Transaxle TCC Actuator - No TCC) in PCM memory. This condition frequently occurs at low mileage (less than 1600 km [1000 miles]).

CAUSE: This condition may be caused by a malfunctioning TCC actuator or a damaged input shaft converter O-ring seal.

CORRECTION: When diagnosing DTC P0741, refer to the following procedure.

PROCEDURE

1. Connect scan tool and retrieve diagnostic trouble code(s).

- If DTCs other than DTC P0741 are present, refer to the diagnostic chart for DTCS retrieved in the appropriate year "Automatic Transaxle Service Manual."

- If only DTC P0741 is present proceed to next step.

2. Perform an actuator quick check to verify proper TCC actuator operation. (Refer to appropriate year "Automatic Transaxle Service Manual" for actuator quick check procedure.)

- If TCC actuator is stuck/no tone, or muffled/low tone, replace TCC actuator and/or check for terminal tightness.

- If TCC actuator functions properly, remove the transaxle from the vehicle according to procedures in the appropriate year "Automatic Transaxle Service Manual," and proceed to next step:

3. Remove torque converter from the transaxle by sliding it off the input shaft and inspect for a damaged or missing input shaft converter O-ring seal.

- If the input shaft converter O-ring seal is damaged or missing, install a new seal and back-up ring using SA9135T expander and installer according to procedure in the appropriate year "Automatic Transaxle Service Manual."

- If the input shaft converter O-ring seal is not damaged or missing, inspect for the following:

* O-ring missing or leaking on torque converter hub seal * Input shaft to stator shaft seal(s) leaking * Missing ball pressed into input shaft * Damaged torque converter

4. After repair has been made, install torque converter to transaxle, and install transaxle into vehicle. (Refer to procedures in the appropriate year "Automatic Transaxle Service Manual.")

CLAIM INFORMATION: To receive credit for this repair during the warranty coverage period, submit a claim through the Saturn Dealer System for K7022 (Replace Input Shaft to Converter O-Ring Seal) or K6547 (Replace Transaxle Control Actuator Valve), or if another procedure is performed, refer to the appropriate Electronic Labor Time Guide for the correct Labor Operation Code and Time.
