SERVICE INFO ON INSTALL SERVICE MAIN BODY WIRE HARNESS

SUBJECT: Service Information on Installing Service Main Body Wire Harness Assemblies

MODELS AFFECTED: 1996-1997 Saturns

PURPOSE: All service main body wire harness assemblies released contain RKE/SSS content. The procedures in this bulletin must be performed to modify the main body wire harness for installation on the following vehicles:

* 1996 and 1997 Saturns without RKE/SSS * 1997 Saturn Sedans with or without RKE/SSS

IMPORTANT: If the service main body wire harness is not modified according to procedures in this bulletin before being installed in one of these vehicles, the following will occur:

* On 1996 and 1997 Saturns without RKE/SSS, the dome lamp will not function.

* On 1997 Saturns without RKE/SSS, the starter disable relay will not function, not allowing the vehicle to start.

* On 1997 Saturn Sedans only with or without RKE/SSS, the tail lamp connector may require modification before installation on a Saturn Sedan, depending on the service main body wire harness received from Saturn Service Parts.

PROCEDURES

Dome Lamp Enable - 1996 and 1997 Vehicles

1. Locate the RKE/SSS module connector on the service main body wire harness.

2. At the RKE/SSS module body harness connector, cut the WHT wire from cavity "K" (circuit 156C) and the WHT wire from cavity "S" (circuit 156B). Using the Saturn approved crimp and seal splice sleeves, connect circuits 156C and 156B together.

Starter Relay Enable - 1997 Vehicles

1. Locate the RYE/SSS module connector on the service main body wire harness.

2. At the RKE/SSS module connector, cut the YEL/BLK wire from cavity "D" (circuit 625A) to the BLK wire from cavity "N" (circuit 55ORR). Using the Saturn approved crimp and seal splice sleeves, connect circuits 625A and 55ORR together.

IMPORTANT: If the service main body wire harness is installed in a Sedan without certain optional equipment, there will be certain connectors that are not used. These connectors will have to be secured to the service main body wire harness in a way to ensure the connectors will not come in contact with anything that may cause a rattle in the vehicle. The preferred method to secure the connectors to the service main body wire harness is by using wire harness straps (P/N 21020792). Since most of the unused connectors have at least one circuit that has battery voltage with ignition On and some such as the power door lock switch connectors have battery voltage with the ignition Off, cutting the connectors is not recommended.

Tail lamp Harness Connector - Sedans Only

IMPORTANT: Because of a body harness connector change from a 6-way tail lamp connector to a 5-way tail lamp connector, the following procedure may be required on 1997 Sedans when replacing the main body wire harness.

Check the service main body wire harness to determine if it has a 5 -way or 6 -way connector for the rear tail lamps.

* If the service main body wire harness has 6-way tail lamp connectors and the vehicle is equipped with 5-way tail lamp connectors (vehicles built after and including VIN VZ209354), replace the existing 6-way tail lamp connectors on the service main body wire harness with 5-way connectors (P/N 12146045). Back the terminals out of the existing connectors and reinstall in new connectors according to the chart in this bulletin.

* If the service main body wire harness has 5-way tail lamp connectors and the vehicle is equipped with 6-way tail lamp connectors (vehicles built before and including VIN VZ209353), replace the existing 5-way tail lamp connectors on the service main body wire harness with 6-way connectors (P/N 12167201). Back the terminals out of the existing connectors and reinstall in new connectors according to the chart in this bulletin.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
