KNOCKING OR RATTTLE NOISE AT RIGHT FRONT OF FLOOR TO FRONT

SUBJECT: Knocking or Rattle Noise at Right Front of Floor to Front of Dash Area During Driveway, Parking Lot Maneuvers or Stop and Go Traffic (Replace EVAP Canister Purge Solenoid Bracket)

MODELS AFFECTED: 1996 and 1997 Saturns

CONDITION: Some customers may comment on a knocking or rattle type noise coming from the right front of the floor, to front of dash area when the vehicle is in gear and is accelerated lightly off idle. (This condition requires vehicle speed input.) These noises will be most noticeable during driveway or parking lot maneuvers, or while creeping forward in stop and go traffic. The noise may sound like an engine knock.

CAUSE: These noises may be caused by normal EVAP canister purge solenoid actuation noise being transmitted through the rubber hose to the front of the dash as a result of a loose fit between the EVAP canister purge solenoid and its bracket.

CORRECTION: Verify complaint noise with customer. After the noise has been identified the EVAP canister purge solenoid can be checked for being the cause of the noise(s) by using the scan tool special test. With the scan tool, when the noise(s) is heard, turn the EVAP canister purge solenoid Off (O%).

- If the noise(s) is eliminated with the EVAP canister purge solenoid Off, proceed to the repair procedure in this bulletin.

- If the noise(s) is not eliminated, refer to the appropriate year "Engine/Fuel/Air Intake/ Exhaust Service Manual" for diagnosis.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
