Set the parking brake before shifting your manual transmission into REVERSE (R) or your automatic transmission into PARK (P).
Hold the brake pedal down, and pull up on the parking brake lever. If the ignition is on, the red brake system warning light will come on. Driving with the parking brake engage will limit the ability of your brake system to function properly.
Hold the brake pedal down. Pull the parking brake lever up slightly until you can press the release button. Hold the release button in as you move the brake lever all the way down.
Notice: Driving with the parking brake on can overheat the brake system and cause premature wear or damage to brake system parts. Make sure that the parking brake is fully released and the brake warning light is off before driving.
You can turn your front wheels to assist your vehicle from rolling downhill or out into traffic.
