Caution: It can be dangerous to get out of the vehicle if the shift lever is not fully in P (Park) with the parking brake firmly set. The vehicle can roll. If you have left the engine running, the vehicle can move suddenly. You or others could be injured. To be sure the vehicle will not move, even when you are on fairly level ground, use the steps that follow. If you are pulling a trailer, see Towing a Trailer .

  1. Hold the brake pedal down with your right foot, and pull up on the parking brake.
  2. Move the gear selector into the PARK (P) position. Hold the button on the selector, and push the selector all the way toward the front of your car.

If you don't have to leave the engine running, then:

    • Move the ignition key to "LOCK".
    • Remove the key and take it with you.

There are two ways to check to be sure your car is in PARK (P). Here is the first way: After you complete step 2 above, see if you can move the gear selector away from PARK (P) without first pushing the button. If you can, it means that the gear selector wasn't fully locked into PARK (P). If you can walk away from your vehicle with the ignition key in your hand, your vehicle is in PARK (P).
