GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

Caution: Be careful when you handle a sensing and diagnostic module (SDM). Do not strike or jolt the SDM. Before applying power to the SDM:

   • Remove any dirt, grease, etc. From the mounting surface.
   • Position the SDM horizontally on the mounting surface.
   • Tighten all of the SDM fasteners and SDM bracket fasteners to the specified torque value.
Failure to follow the correct procedures could cause air bag deployment, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

CAUTION:  Proper operation of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) requires that any repairs to the vehicle structure return the vehicle structure to the original production configuration. Not properly repairing the vehicle structure could cause non-deployment of the air bag in a frontal collision or deployment of the air bag for conditions less severe than intended.

Accident With or Without Air Bag Deployment

After any collision, inspect these components as indicated. If you detect any damage, replace the component. If you find any damage to the mounting points or mounting hardware, repair the component or replace the hardware as needed.

   •
  • Interior trim components and their fasteners, including visors and coat hook mounting brackets.
  •    •
  • Steering column -- Perform the Repairs and Inspections Required After a Collision .
  •    •
  • I/P knee bolsters -- Inspect knee bolsters for bending, twisting, buckling, or any type of damage.
  •    •
  • I/P brackets, braces, etc. -- Inspect for bending, twisting, buckling, or any other type of damage.
  •    •
  • Safety belts -- Perform the Operational and Functional Checks .
  • Accident With Air Bag Deployment

After a collision involving air bag deployment, replace these components. If you detect any damage to the mounting points or mounting hardware, repair or replace the mounting points and mounting hardware as needed.

       •
  • Passenger inflator module
  •    •
  • Inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module
  •    •
  • Driver inflator module
  • After a collision involving air bag deployment, inspect the following components as indicated. Perform these component inspections in addition to the inspections indicated as "Accident With or Without Air Bag Deployment". If you find any damage to the mounting points or mounting hardware, repair the component or replace the hardware as needed.

       •
  • Roll connector-- Inspect the coil and the coil wiring harness for melting, scorching, or other damage due to excessive heat.
  •    •

Important: The following SIR system components MUST be replaced after a side impact crash involving air bag deployment:

  • Side Impact Sensor
  •    •
  • Head curtain inflator module trim channel
  •    •
  • Head curtain inflator module
  •    •
  • SDM
  •    •
  • Striker trim cover and fasteners
  •    •
  • Headliner
  •    •
  • Windshield garnish molding
  • For coupe only, inspect and replace striker trim cover brackets, if required.

    Removal Procedure

Notice: If sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) is dropped or shows any sign of damage, it must be replaced.

Important: Prior to removing sensing and diagnostic module (SDM), ignition key must be in the OFF position.

Notice: Do not open the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) case for any reason. Touching the connector pins or soldered components may cause electrostatic discharge damage. Repair of a faulty SDM is by replacement only.

      Object Number: 866413 Size: SH
    1. Disable the SIR system including head curtain inflator modules, if equipped. Refer to Disabling the SIR System .
    2. Remove the console front screws.
    3. Remove the console rear screws.
    4. Lift the rear of the console.
    5. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer and disconnect the wire harness.
    6. Remove the bolts and SDM.

    Installation Procedure

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

      Object Number: 862778 Size: SH

Notice: The SDM bolts provide a ground for the SIR system. DO NOT use Loctite® 242 Threadlocker, or equivalent material, on the bolts because it will insulate the ground path.

    1. Position SDM and install bolts.
    2. Tighten
Tighten the SDM bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

Important: For vehicles without head curtain inflators, the SDM has only one connector.

    3. Connect the wire harnesses and install the CPA retainers.
    4. Install the console screws.
    5. Tighten
Tighten the console screws to 1.2 N·m (11 lb in).

Important: The AIR BAG indicator may remain ON after the SDM has been replaced. DTC B1001 may set requiring the SDM part number to be set in multiple modules. If the indicator remains ON after enabling the SIR system, perform the diagnostic system check and follow the steps thoroughly to ensure that the SDM is set properly.

    6. Enable the SIR system, including head curtain inflator modules, if equipped. Refer to Enabling the SIR System .
