    Caution: Ensure that the vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which the components are being removed.

  1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  2. Remove left road wheel.
  3. Important: Remove front section of splash shield first, then rear.

  4. Remove left side splash shield.
  5. 3.1. Remove two push pins.

            Important: If molded-in fasteners are damaged or broken, drill out with a 5/16 in. bit and replace with a push pin.

    3.2. Remove lower shield to frame molded-in fasteners at frame by gently prying at three fastener locations.

  6. Loosen intermediate steering haft cover from steering gear and move up enough to access intermediate steering shaft/pinion pinch bolt.
  7. Remove pinch bolt.
  8. Remove intermediate steering shaft from pinion.
  9. Remove cover fasteners at body.
  10. Remove cover from vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 862145  Size: SH
  1. Slide replacement cover over intermediate steering shaft.
  2. Install cover-to-body fasteners.
  3. Tighten
    Tighten Intermediate Steering Shaft Cover-to-Body 10 N·m (89 lbs in).

  4. Position intermediate steering shaft onto pinion.
  5. Important: Use Loctite 242® (or equivalent) on thread of pinch bolt.

  6. Install intermediate steering shaft-to-steering gear pinch bolt.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten Intermediate Steering Shaft-to-Steering Gear Pinch Bolt 47 N·m (35 lbs ft).

  8. Slide cover over intermediate steering shaft.
  9. Attach cover securely to steering gear.

    Important: Install rear section of splash shield first, then front.

  11. Install left side splash shield.
  12. Install tabs in body cut-out.
  13. Important: Make sure splash shield flaps are tucked in at body locations.

  14. Align molded-in shield fasteners with holes in cradle. Push straight in to install.
  15. Install push pins.
  16. Notice: Before installing wheels, remove rust or corrosion from wheel mounting surfaces and brake rotors/drums. Failure to do so can cause wheel nuts to loosen in service.

  17. Position wheel onto hub.
  18. Install wheel nuts and tighten in a crisscross pattern. Repeat tightening pattern to make sure torque is correct.
  19. Lower vehicle from hoist.
  20. Tighten
    Tighten Wheel Nuts 140 N·m (103 lbs ft).
