Caution: Safety precautions must be followed when handling a deployed inflator module
(air bag). After deployment, the inflator module (air bag) surface may contain a small
amount of sodium hydroxide, a by-product of the deployment reaction, that is irritating
to the skin and eyes. Most of the powder on the inflator module (air bag) is harmless.
as a precaution, wear gloves and safety glasses when handling a deployed inflator
module (air bag), and wash your hands with mild soap and water afterwards.
Caution: When you are carrying an undeployed inflator module:
• | Do not carry the inflator module by the wires or connector on
the inflator module |
• | Make sure the bag opening points away from you |
When you are storing an undeployed inflator module, make sure the bag
opening points away from the surface on which the inflator module rests.
When you are storing a steering column, do not rest the column with the bag
opening facing down and the column vertical. Provide free space for the
air bag to expand in case of an accidental deployment. Otherwise, personal
injury may result.
Important: In the event deployment has occurred, refer to
Repairs and Inspections Required After a Collision
.
Repositioning Sir Roll Connector Assembly
Important: If yellow tab is inadvertently removed during installation or removal and roll
connector hub has been rotated, it must be repositioned.
- Gently rotate roll connector hub CLOCKWISE with tab removed until slight tension
is present.
- Gently rotate roll connector hub COUNTERCLOCKWISE (count approximately
five revolutions) until slight tension is present.
- Gently rotate roll connector hub CLOCKWISE one half of the number of revolutions
counted in step 2, approximately 2.5 times.
- Rotate smallest distance required to align yellow tab.
- Install yellow tab. Use tape if tab is unavailable.
2000 Vehicles Only
- Coil Assembly
- Yellow Tab
2001 Vehicles Only
- Coil Assembly
- Yellow Tab
- Mounting Screws
Removal Procedure
- Position the vehicle with the front wheels pointed straight ahead and the steering
wheel centered.
Important: Always align the front wheels to the straight ahead position when removing or
installing a roll connector.
- If a roll connector is removed without the wheels in the straight ahead position,
the same one may be installed if the steering shaft and roll connector hub have not
rotated.
- Disable the SIR system. Refer to
Disabling the SIR System
.
- Remove the driver inflator module. Refer to
Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement
.
- Remove the steering wheel. Refer to
Steering Wheel Replacement
in Steering Wheel and Column.
- Remove upper steering column shroud.
- Remove the ignition
switch bezel and the lower steering column shroud.
- Remove the roll connector assembly rosebud-type fastener from the bracket
below the steering column.
- Disconnect the horn/cruise connector from the steering column.
- 2000 Vehicles Only
Remove the roll connector assembly by removing the fasteners.
- 2001 Vehicles Only
Remove the roll connector assembly by prying the plastic retainers.
- Guide the roll connector wiring harness from behind the ever control switch
and remove the roll connector.
Installation Procedure
Important: A new roll connector is equipped with a yellow tab that is removed after steering
wheel is installed. This tab passes through the steering wheel.
- Route roll connector wiring harness and horn/cruise connector behind turn
signal lever combination switch and down steering column.
- 2000 Vehicles Only
Install the roll connector assembly by installing the fasteners.
- 2001 Vehicles Only
Install the roll connector assembly by engaging the plastic tabs.
- Install the roll connector wiring harness to the rosebud-type fastener
below the steering column.
- Connect the horn/cruise connector.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the upper and lower steering column shroud fasteners and the ignition
bezel.
Tighten
Tighten the steering column shroud fasteners to 4 N·m (35 lb in).
- Remove the yellow tab or tape from the roll connector.
- Install the steering wheel. Refer to
Steering Wheel Replacement
in Steering Wheel and Column.
- Install the driver inflator module. Refer to
Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement
.
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to
Enabling the SIR System
