SA9209C Inner Tie Rod Wrench

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 862158  Size: SH

    Caution: Ensure that the vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which the components are being removed.

  1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  2. Remove wheel and tire.
  3. Loosen tie rod lock nut.
  4. Remove steering gear. (Refer to appropriate procedure in this section.)

  6. Unthread outer tie rod from inner tie rod.
  7. Remove outer tie rod lock nut.
  8. Remove steering gear boot.
  9. Slide shock damper off inner tie rod towards the steering gear.

  10. Object Number: 861813  Size: SH

    Notice: Steering gear rack must be held stationary during inner tie rod removal to prevent steering gear damage. Use an appropriate size wrench at the rack teeth to hold the rack during inner tie rod removal. Protect rack teeth with a shop cloth. For right side inner tie rod removal, it will be necessary to remove the left side boot to access the rack teeth.

  11. Remove inner tie rod assembly from steering gear.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 861804  Size: SH
  1. Remove old threadlocker from threads of rack and inner tie rod.
  2. Important: Threads must be clean prior to threadlocker application. Do not use too much threadlocker, use only enough to evenly coat threads.

  3. Apply Loctite  262® Threadlocker (or equivalent) to inner tie rod threads.

  4. Object Number: 861815  Size: SH
  5. If shock damper was removed, slide it onto steering gear.
  6. Notice: Steering gear rack must be held stationary during inner tie rod removal to prevent steering gear damage. Use an appropriate size wrench at the rack teeth to hold the rack during inner tie rod removal. Protect rack teeth with a shop cloth. For right side inner tie rod removal, it will be necessary to remove the left side boot to access the rack teeth.

  7. Install inner tie rod assembly onto steering gear using SA9209C .
  8. Tighten
    Tighten Inner Tie Rod-to-Steering Gear 95 N·m (70 lbs ft).

  9. Slide shock damper up against inner tie rod assembly.

  11. Install steering gear boot onto steering gear.
  12. Thread tie rod lock nut onto inner tie rod.
  13. Thread outer tie rod onto inner tie rod.
  14. Install steering gear. (Refer to the appropriate procedure in this section.)
  15. Notice: Before installing wheels, remove rust or corrosion from wheel mounting surfaces and brake rotors/drums. Failure to do so can cause wheel nuts to loosen in service.

  16. Position wheel onto hub.
  17. Install wheel nuts and tighten in a crisscross pattern. Repeat tightening pattern to be sure torque is correct.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten Wheel Nuts 140 N·m (103 lbs ft).

  19. Set toe. Refer to Wheel Alignment Specifications in Wheel Alignment.
