Changing the transaxle fluid and filter can be a difficult task. You may choose to have this service performed at your Saturn retail service facility. If, you choose to perform this task your self, follow these instructions:

  1. Fluid should be drained when it reaches normal operating temperatures at 190-200°F (88-93°C). This temperature is reached after approximately 15 miles (24 km) of highway driving.
  2. Place a suitable container, large enough to hold 5 L (5.3 qt), under the drain plug and remove the drain plug.

  4. Allow 5 minutes for the old fluid to drain completely and then reinstall the drain plug.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the drain plug to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  6. Remove the air induction system to gain access to the filter. Remove the three screws securing the air filter box and pushpin securing the resonator. Remove the resonator and air filter box.
  7. Remove the filter using a strap-type filter wrench.

  9. Remove and wipe clean the filter magnet.
  10. Install the clean magnet on the new filter.
  11. Lube the seal of the new filter with Saturn transaxle fluid (P/N 21005856).
  12. DEXRON®-III may be substituted if Saturn transaxle fluid is not available. However, shift feel may be affected and a maintenance interval of 30,000 miles (50,000 km) must then be followed for transaxle fluid and filter changes.

  13. Install the new filter. Refer to the label on the filter for tighten instructions.
  14. Install the air filter box, if removed.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the air filter box to 7 N·m (62 lb in).

  16. Install the air induction system and tighten the clamps.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the clamps to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  18. Remove the dipstick and refill the transaxle using Saturn transaxle fluid (P/N 21005856).
  19. Check the transaxle fluid lever. Refer to Automatic Transaxle Fluid - "How to Check" and check for leaks.
