Your gear selector has several different positions.

PARK (P)

This position locks your front wheels. It is the best position to use when you start your engine because your vehicle can't move easily. The maximum engine rpm is limited in Park (P) or Neutral (N) to 4000 RPM by your vehicle's computer. This is to prevent engine and transaxle damage.

Shifting Into Park (P)

  1. Hold the brake pedal down with your right foot, and pull up on the parking brake.
  2. Move the gear selector into the Park (P) position. Hold the button on the selector, and push the selector all the way toward the front of your car.

If you don't have to leave the engine running, then:

    • Move the ignition key to "LOCK".
    • Remove the key and take it with you.

There are two ways to check to be sure your car is in Park (P) before you leave it.

    • After you complete step 2 above, see if you can move the gear selector away from Park (P) without first pushing the button. If you can't, it means that the gear selector wasn't fully locked into Park (P).
    • If you can walk away from your car with the ignition key in your hand, your car is in Park (P).
