Clogged Windshield Washer Nozzle and/or Poor Windshield Washer Spray

Subject:Clogged Windshield Washer Nozzle and/or Poor Windshield Washer Spray (Replace Windshield Washer Pump Seal and Affected Washer Nozzle{s})

Models:1999-2002 Saturn S-Series vehicles built before and including VIN 2Z112594



Condition

Some customer may comment that one or both windshield washer nozzles are not spraying properly.

Cause

Debris is washer solvent may clog or restrict the flow through the windshield washer nozzles. This debris may be small enough to pass through the washer pump seal (filter)< but they are too large to pass through the washer nozzle.

Correction

Follow the procedure in this bulletin to replace windshield washer pump seal and affected washer nozzle(s).

Procedure


    Object Number: 867668  Size: SH
  1. Remove air inlet grille panel.
  2. • On 1999 models, refer to "Air Inlet Grille Panel" removal procedure in the Front End Section of the 98-99 Body/Repair service manual.
    • On 2000--2002 models, refer to "Air Inlet Grille Panel - All" removal procedure in the Body Front End section of the 2000/2002 Body/Electrical (Volume I) service manual.
  3. Disconnect washer nozzle hoses from washer nozzles.
  4. Caution:  Protect Your Eyes When Using High-Pressure Air.

  5. Blow air through end of washer nozzle hose that was removed in step 1.
  6. Pinch attachment fingers on bottom of affected nozzle(s) and remove nozzle(s).
  7. Obtain replacement parts. Refer to "Parts Requirements" in this bulletin.
  8. Important: Make sure that nozzle is fully seated in grille and push into place.

  9. Install new nozzle(s) through opening in air inlet
  10. Attach washer nozzle hoses to nozzles. (Do not attach hose to line from pump at this time).

  11. Object Number: 868435  Size: SH
  12. From under vehicle, remove front push pin from wheel house liner.
  13. Disconnect wiring harness from pump.
  14. Place holding container under pump to catch solvent from container.
  15. Disconnect washer hose form pump.

  16. Object Number: 868439  Size: SH
  17. Remove pump from container by pulling firmly.
  18. Remove pump seal from pump assembly and discard.
  19. Caution: Protect Your Eyes When Using High-Pressure Air.

  20. Blow air through washer hose to remove debris.
  21. Install new pump seal onto pump assembly.
  22. Install pump by pushing firmly into opening on container.
  23. Connect washer hose to pump.

  25. Connect wiring harness to pump.
  26. Install front push pin to wheelhouse liner.
  27. Install air inlet grille panel.
  28. • On 1999 model, refer to "Air Inlet Grille Panel" installation procedure in the Front End section of the 98-99 Body/Repair service manual.
    • On 2000-2002 models, refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel - All" installation procedure in the Body Front End section of the 2000/2002 Body/Electrical (Volume 1) service manual.

    Notice: Do not reuse washer solvent as it may contain debris that may prematurely clog new pump seal.

  29. Fill solvent container with new washer solvent.
