Difficulty with Manual Transaxle Shifting Into Gear While Engine is Running

Subject:Difficulty with Manual Transaxle Shifting Into Gear While Engine is Running (Remove and Replace Clutch Pressure Plate)

Models:2002 Saturn S-Series vehicles equipped with MP2 or MP3 manual transaxles built from and including VIN 2Z264981 and up to and including VIN 2Z300776.



Condition

Some customers may comment they have difficulty shifting the transaxle into gear.

Cause

Clutch pressure plate sensing ring may be cracked.

Correction

Remove transaxle and replace the clutch cover assembly (P/N 21120532). Replace clutch disc (P/N 21120533) as part of procedure.

Procedure

  1. Verify that the VIN is within the range specified on the cover page of this bulletin.
  2. Attempt to shift vehicle into any gear while the engine is running.
  3. 2.1. If the vehicle can be shifted into gear, but is difficult to shift, refer to the Diagnostic section of the 2000-2002 S-Series Manual Transaxle Service Manual.
    2.2. If the clutch is inoperative, or shifting cannot be performed while the engine is running, proceed to step 3.
  4. Remove transaxle from vehicle. Refer to "Transaxle Removal" procedure in the 2000-2002 S-Series Manual Transaxle Service Manual.
  5. Remove clutch cover assembly. Refer to "Clutch Disc, Clutch Cover, and Flywheel Removal and Inspection" procedure in the Clutch section of the 2000-2002 S-Series Manual Transaxle Service Manual.
  6. Obtain replacement clutch cover assembly (P/N 21120532) including clutch disc (P/N 21120533) and reassemble clutch system. Refer to "Clutch Disc, Clutch Cover, and Flywheel Installation" procedure in the Clutch section of the 2000-2002 S-Series Manual Transaxle Service Manual.
  7. Install transaxle into vehicle. Refer to Refer to "Transaxle Installation" procedure in the 2000-2002 S-Series Manual Transaxle Service Manual.
  8. Drive the vehicle to verify that the condition has been corrected.
