New Automatic Transaxle Clutch Plate Assemblies

Subject:Service Information on New Automatic Transaxle Clutch Plate Assemblies. This bulletin is being revised to add new service information and supercedes 97-t-48, which should be discarded.

Models:1996-1997 Saturns equipped with MP6 or MP7 automatic transaxles

Purpose

New automatic transaxle internal and external tang clutch plate assemblies have been released for servicing 3rd and 4th clutch assemblies on 1996 -1997 MP6 or MP7 automatic transaxles. When servicing a 1996 or 1997 automatic transaxle, and it is necessary to replace the 3rd or 4th clutch plate assemblies or the transaxle assembly, the powertrain control module (pcm) may need to be reprogrammed. Refer to the following procedues to determine if the PCM needs to be reprogrammed and for the reprogramming procedures.

Procedure

Connect a Scan tool or the service stall system (SSS) to the vehicle and turn the Ignition On. Determine the PCM calibration software package number by one of the following methods:

    •  Tech 2 -- From the Powertrain Applications menu, select the Vehicle System Information, ECM data display table. Record the "Controller Part Number."
    • PDT -- From the Saturn Scanner, ECM menu, select the Vehicle ID data table. Record the "PCM Part #."
    • SSS -- From the Dynamic Display, view Serial Data, ECM menu, select the Vehicle ID serial data screen. Record the "PCM Part #."

If the Controller/PCM Part number matches one of the numbers listed in the "Controller/PCM Part (End Model)" table located below, then the PCM does not need to be reprogrammed.

If the Controller/PCM Part number does not match one of the numbers listed in the "Controller/PCM Part (End Mode)" table, then reprogram the PCM. (Refer to SSS User Manual for reprogramming the PCM.)

Important: If the new PCM does not have the proper calibration software when the new clutch plates or automatic transaxle are installed on 1996 or 1997 vehicles, poor shift quality such as cold engine flare(s) followed by a bump during a shift may be experienced.

Important: Version 42.0 or greater service stall system (SSS) software is required for this flash process. Verify the SSS is version 42.0 or greater.

If SSS version 42.0 or greater is not available, call Saturn Customer Support Center at 1-800-7SATURN (1-800-772-8876), PROMPT 3. In Canada, call 1-800-828-6860 for English, or 1-800-503-3222 for French.

Important: If installing new calibration software, it will be necessary to perform the crankshaft learning procedure. (Refer to Technical Information Bulletin 96-t-39, and perform the Crankshaft Learning Procedure contained in the bulletin.)
