Rattle Coming from Front of Vehicle at Idle (Check and Adjust Hood Alignment)

Subject:Rattle Coming From Front of Vehicle at Idle (Check and Adjust Hood Alignment)

Models:1997 -- 1999 Saturn Coupes

Conditions

Some customers may comment on a rattle noise coming from the dash or front of vehicle area. This noise is noticed mostly when the vehicle is stopped and idling.

Cause

The hood, hood latch, down stop bumpers, and/or hinges may not be aligned properly which may cause the front of hood fit to be loose.

Correction

Adjust the hood according to Body/Repair Service Manual.

Procedures

  1. Verify condition by grabbing the front edge of the hood panel just above the center of both headlamps. With quick short up and down movement, observe the movement of the hood and listen for a rattle type noise between the hood striker and latch.
  2. • If the hood has excessive movement and exhibits a rattle noise, proceed to the next step.
    • If the hood does not have excessive movement, refer to other service information for assistance in diagnosing the rattle complaint.
  3. Refer to the "Clearance and Flushness Specification" and "Hood Adjustment" procedures for the " Coupe " in the Body/Repair Service Manual to obtain a proper hood panel alignment.
