Rattle or Buzz Noise Coming From the Instrument Cluster Assembly

Subject:Rattle or Buzz Noise Coming from the Instrument Cluster Assembly -- Apply Insulator to Cluster Housing

Models:1995-1997 Saturns

Condition:

A rattle or buzz noise coming from the instrument cluster assembly. Noises may sound like they are coming from the tachometer or speedometer assemblies. This condition may be more pronounced while driving on rough road surfaces. Pressing against the instrument cluster assembly eliminates the noises.

Cause:

The tachometer and/or the speedometer leg, located directly below the high beam indicator, may have an air gap between the inside back center support of the instrument cluster assembly housing. Under certain conditions, this air gap may allow the tachometer and/or the speedometer to vibrate against the instrument cluster housing, resulting in a rattle or buzz noise.

Correction:

Apply insulator to the inside back of the instrument cluster assembly housing center support according to the procedures in this bulletin.

Procedures

Important: For the procedures in this bulletin, refer to the Instrument Panel and Console section of the 1995 Body/Repair Service Manual, or the 1996 or 1997 Audio System and I/P Cluster Service Manual, depending on the year of the vehicle being serviced.

  1. Remove the instrument cluster assembly.
  2. Notice: Failure to use the anti-static mat SA 9502Z properly may result in damage or latent damage to the cluster electronics.

  3. Remove the speedometer and tachometer from the instrument cluster assembly.
  4. Cut a small piece of insulator material P/N 21040429 to 15.87 x 12.70 mm (5/8 x 1/2 in), and apply to the center support of the instrument cluster back housing as shown in the illustration.
  5. Important: The insulator is released for the 1992-1996 upper I/P trim pad, however, it can be used for this purpose, when cut to the measurement given above.
