If you are towing your Saturn forward with all four wheels on the ground, the transmission and tire maintenance should be scheduled by mileage accumulation through both driving and towing , not to driven (odometer) mileage. Tire wear will reflect actual "rolling" mileage and may be greater than expected for the current odometer mileage.
Before towing, turn the ignition to the "ACC" position and turn off all of the accessories and fog lamp switches.
In the underhood fuse block, locate the 30A IGN 1/4 maxifuse (a large green fuse closest to the battery), and remove it. Be sure to re-install this fuse before attempting to restart your Saturn.
The transaxle should be in "N" (Neutral) and the parking brake released. Before towing your vehicle, make sure the transaxle fluid is at the correct level.
Notice: Too much or too little fluid can damage the transmission. Be sure that the transmission fluid is at the proper level before towing with all four wheels on the ground.
To prevent damage to the automatic transaxle when towing a Saturn vehicle on all four wheels, make sure the transaxle fluid is at the correct towing level.
The fluid, when checked at normal operating temperatures of 190°F - 200°F (88°C - 93°C), should be in the crosshatched area on the dipstick. The fluid level should be no higher than the "FULL" marking and no lower than the "ADD" line.
Notice: Do not tow a vehicle with the front drive wheels on the ground if one of the front tires is a compact spare tire. Towing with two different tire sizes on the front of the vehicle can cause severe damage to the transmission.
Make sure the transaxle fluid never exceeds the top of the cross-hatched area on the dipstick.
For more information on automatic or manual transaxle fluids and checks, see the appropriate heading in the Service and Appearance Care section. Towing speeds should not exceed the legally posted speed limit or 65 mph (105 km/h) maximum. In the event that you need to use the spare tire in place of one of the front tires, rotate a rear tire to the front and install the compact spare tire in the rear of the vehicle.
