Clicking, Ticking or Rubbing Noise From the Instrument Cluster Odometers

Subject:Clicking, Ticking or Rubbing Noise from the Instrument Cluster Odometer -- Replace the Speedometer/Odometer Assembly -- Due to the addition of 1997 vehicles and 1998 vehicles originally produced with a mechanical odometer, and the availability of a revised remanufactured service part, this bulletin supersedes bulletin 95-T-27A, which should be discarded.

Models:1995-1997 Saturn and 1998 Saturns originally produced with a mechanical Odometer. Refer to parts requirements for VIN breakpoints.

Condition:

Some customers may comment that an excessive clicking, ticking or rubbing type of noise can be heard from the instrument cluster assembly while driving the vehicle.

Important: A very slight clicking noise is normal due to the odometer design which increments in steps rather than a continuous motion.

Cause:

Displacement of dampening grease internal to the odometer stepper motor.

Correction:

Verify that the clicking/ticking or rubbing noise can only be heard while the vehicle is being driven and that the frequency of the noise is proportional to the vehicle speed.

If the condition is verified, replace the speedometer/odometer assembly according to the procedure in this bulletin.

Procedure:

Important: For the procedures in this bulletin, refer to Instrument Panel and Console section of the 1995 Body/Repair Service Manual or the 1996,1997,or 1998 Audio System & I/P Cluster Service Manual, depending on the year of the vehicle being serviced.

  1. Remove the instrument cluster assembly.
  2. Notice: Failure to use the anti-static mat SA 9502Z properly may result in damage or latent damage to the cluster electronics.

  3. Remove the speedometer/odometer assembly from the instrument cluster assembly.
  4. Important: In order to prevent the possibility of a rattle condition between the speedometer or tachometer frame and the instrument cluster housing. Insulator material should be applied to the instrument cluster housing prior to installation, if the insulator material is not already present.

  5. Inspect the instrument cluster housing for insulator material.
  6. • If insulator material is not present, proceed to the next step.
    • If insulator material is present, proceed to step 7.
  7. Partially raise the left side of the tachometer assembly by releasing both locking tabs, but do not remove the tachometer assembly from the instrument cluster housing.

  8. Object Number: 880508 Size: SH
  9. Cut a small piece of insulator material P/N 21040429 to 15.87 x 12.70 mm (5/8 x 1/2 in), and apply to the center support of the instrument cluster back housing as shown in the illustration.
  10. Important: The insulator is released for the 1992-1996 upper I/P trim pad, however, it can be used for this purpose, when cut to the measurements given above.

  11. Reinstall the tachometer assembly, making sure both locking tabs are fully seated.
  12. Install the new speedometer/odometer assembly.
  13. Install the instrument cluster assembly.
