A misprint has been identified on page number 318 of the 1996 Saturn Owner's Handbook, under the section titled "Fabric Protection." The 1996 Saturn Owner's Handbook incorrectly states that the 1996 Saturn vehicle's upholstery and carpet have been treated with Scotchgard Fabric Protector. To correct this, 1996 Saturn owners will receive a letter (a copy is attached), informing them of this misprint, and an enclosed self-adhesive label that should be placed over the section titled, "Fabric Protection" located on page number 318.
A sample of the self-adhesive label is shown below:
Fabric Protection
There are many fabric protection products on the market that will help you in protecting the fabric in your Saturn. Before using any type of fabric protection, be sure to follow the manufacturer's warnings and instructions. Even if you choose to use this type of protection, you'll still need to clean your upholstery and carpet often to keep it looking new.
Provided with this bulletin are 20 additional labels. These are to be used for: a) any vehicles in Retailer used or new car inventory, or b) customers requesting assistance with placing the label in their Owner's Handbook. Additional labels may be ordered from Saturn Publications (1 - 800 - 828 - 2112, prompt 3, item number S0396OO1K1O). October, 1996
Dear 1996 Saturn Owner:
We hope you are thoroughly enjoying your 1996 Saturn, and want you to know how proud we are that you decided to join the Saturn Family. We are writing to you today to keep you up to date on current informnation regarding the Saturn product.
To correct the 1996 Saturn Owner's Handbook, we have enclosed a self-adhesive label that should be placed over the section titled, "Fabric Protection" located on page number 318.
Saturns in 1996 were manufactured using upholstery fabrics constructed with polyester fibers, and carpet fabrics constructed with fibers made from nylon. Both polyester and nylon are synthetic (man-made) petroleum based products. We believe them to provide inherent durability, wearability, cleanability and stain resistant qualities. For these and other reasons Scotchgare Fabric Protector or equivalent stain resistant products have not been applied to the upholstery and fabric. We recognize that some customers realize a benefit in using products like Scotchgare Fabric Protector or its equivalent. If you have chosen to use this type of product, always follow the manufacturer's warnings and instructions. Remember, you will still need to clean your upholstery and carpet often to keep it looking new.
We apologize for the inaccuracy within the 1996 Saturn Owner's Handbook and for any inconvenience you may have experienced as a result. If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact your Saturn Retailer or the Saturn Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-553-6000, Prompt 3.
Sincerely,
Saturn Corporation
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
