PART III FEATURES AND DESCRIPTIONS

The Saturn R.I.A. Security System is operated via a transmitter. This transmitter arms and disarms the security system and operates a panic feature. Key functions and features of the R.I.A. Security System are described below.

A. Panic Feature

The horn will sound and the dome lamp will flash when the RED button with the horn symbol on the transmitter is pressed. The horn and dome lamp will cycle on and off for two minutes or until the RED button is pressed again.

B. Arming/Disarming Security System (i.e., Alarm and Starter Disable)

The system is armed automatically when the ARM button (or, for 1996 vehicles with power door locks, the LOCK button) on the transmitter is pressed. The horn will chirp once and the dome larnp will flash twice to let you know the system is armed. (Note: If a door is open when the ARM (or LOCK) button is pressed, the system will not arm and the horn will not chirp for confirmation until the door is closed.) The system is disarmed when the DISARM button (or, for 1996 vehicles with power door locks, the UNLOCK button) on the transmitter is pressed. The horn will chirp two times and the dome lamp will turn on and remain on for forty seconds or until the door is opened.

Additional Transmitter Features (if applicable)

Additional transmitter functions apply for the following vehicles. Reference the operator's guide included with the R.I.A. kit for further details.

- 1996 vehicles with power door locks

The current Remote Keyless Entry (R.K.E.) transmitter is replaced by the security system transmitter which works identically (i.e., power door lock function and trunk hatch release), only with the security features added.

- 1995 vehicles with power door locks

These vehicles do not have a Remote Keyless Entry (R.K.E.) system. However, the transmitter for the R.I.A. security system also operates the power door locks. (Note: The security system transmitter does not operate the trunk hatch release.)

C. Alarm

If any door is opened or the ignition switch is turned when the system is armed, the following will occur:

- Horn will chirp for ten seconds at a reduced volume (pre-alarm warning)

- After this ten second interval, the horn (at full volume) and dome lamp will cycle on and off for two minutes or until any transmitter button is pressed to disarm the system.

Note: If the system has been tampered with, the horn will chirp three times instead of two when the system is disarmed.

D. Starter Disable

The starter will be disabled as soon as the security system is armed.

The vehicle cannot be started until the security system is disarmed. This is done by pressing the DISARM (or UNLOCK) button on the transmitter.

If the transmitter has been lost or is malfunctioning, the operator's guide provides instructions for disarming the security system, thereby allowing the vehicle to be started.

E. Illuminated Entry

When the dome lamp is in the DOOR position and the DISARM (or UNLOCK) button on the transmitter is pressed, the dome lamp will turn on and remain lit for forty seconds or until a door is opened.

Once the door is closed, the dome lamp will remain lit for another forty seconds or until the ignition is turned.

The dome lamp feature allows the vehicle operator to see inside the vehicle before opening the door and provides light once the operator is in the car.

F. Synchronization

If a transmitter does not appear to be functioning properly, it may require synchronization. The operator's guide provides instructions for synchronizing the transmitter.

PART IV INSTALLATION GUIDELINES

A Saturn R.I.A. Security System Installation Manual was mailed to each retail facility as a supplement to the Saturn Service Manual. This manual provides instructions on installing the R.I.A. kits.

PART V WARRANTY GUIDELINES

The installation of a Saturn R.I.A. Security System must be added to the vehicle's warranty profile to allow for validation and payment of subsequent warranty repairs. Specifically, each initial installation of the Saturn R.I.A. Security System should be submitted as follows:

Sale Type Labor 0p Code --------- ------------- Internal X0017

The Saturn R.I.A. Security System is covered by the 12 month/12,000 mile parts warranty or the remainder of the 36 month/36,000 mile vehicle warranty, whichever is greater. (If sold over-the-counter, only the 12 month parts warranty applies.)

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
