Circuit Description

Object Number: 902523 Size: MF

DTC P0717 indicates no turbine speed signal pulses are present on circuit 1230 at the PCM. Transaxle turbine shaft speed values are provided by the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor. The sensor is a permanent magnet (PM) generator mounted near the pressure filter on the transaxle case. The PM generator produces a pulsing voltage whenever turbine shaft speed is above 250 RPM. These pulses occur 8 times per each turbine shaft revolution and are translated to provide turbine shaft speed in RPM.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

DTC P0717 is set when the PCM has detected the following conditions for more than 2 seconds:

    • Turbine speed is 0.
    • Vehicle speed is greater than 10 km/h (6 mph).
    • Engine speed is greater than 3,472 RPM.
    • The condition exists for 2 seconds.

Test Description

Numbered steps below refer to numbered steps on the chart.

  1. This step verifies the problem is still present.
  2. This test indicates if the problem is a PCM or a wiring/sensor problem.
  3. An open, ground, or a short to voltage in circuits 1230 or 1231 will cause DTC P0717 to set. This step indicates which circuit is faulty.
  4. An open or shorted sensor will set DTC P0717. This test indicates if the problem is a wiring problem or a faulty sensor.

Repair Verification

Monitor the DTC menu Code Status for Pass Since code Clear and Pass This Ignition Cycle. When both have passed, the repair is verified.

Criteria for pass turbine shaft speed is greater than 1,232 RPM for 2 seconds.
