Generator and Engine Wiring Harness Design Change

This bulletin provides information on a design change of the generator assembly, and the impact these changes have made on servicing vehicles.

Generator Assemblies

Saturn vehicles now use 3 different generator assemblies. The following chart shows the usage for these 3 generators.

The following information describes the differences in the physical appearance, service diagnostics, and removal and installation procedures of the CS121D generator.

Physical Appearance

The CS121D generator uses a different electrical connector, requires no generator splash shield, and has dual internal fans.

Service Diagnostics

Follow the service diagnostic procedure within the Electrical Service Manual except for the following difference:

A good CS121D generator will provide a minimum output greater than 63 amps when performing the generator output test on the Saturn electrical system tester-- SA9154Z.

Special Service Tools

Both the CS121D generator and the CS130 generator require the use of an output stud wrench -- SA9401C-- when removing the fusible link wire.

Notice: If the B+ stud is not held with the output stud wrench SA9401C, and the B+ stud rotates, the insulator may break causing the generator to fail.

The engine wiring harness used with the CS121D generator was changed to accommodate the new generator connector. Generator connector kit P/N21024414 and lead kit 12116713 are available for harness repair.
