Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Caution: Ensure that the vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which the components are being removed.

  3. Jack or raise the vehicle on a hoist.

    Notice: Always spray the starter solenoid electrical connections with penetrating oil prior to removing the nuts. Use extreme care to prevent cracking the solenoid end-cap, which will allow moisture to corrode the solenoid contacts.

  5. Disconnect the two starter electrical connections and lay the wires aside.

  7. Remove the two starter assembly-to-engine block bolts.
  8. Pull the starter rearward, toward the left-hand side of the vehicle for removal.

Installation Procedure

  1. Guide the starter into the flywheel housing and rotate the assembly until the lower bolt hole in the starter nose aligns.
  2. Loosely install the lower starter housing-to-engine block bolt.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install the upper starter housing-to-engine block bolt.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the starter motor-to-block to 37 N·m (27 lb ft).

    Notice: Improper torque may crack the solenoid end-cap and allow moisture to corrode the electrical contacts.

  6. Tighten both upper and lower attachment bolts and torque.
  7. Install the solenoid ignition wire (small purple wire).
  8. Attach the positive battery cable and fusible link to the starter and route the cable so it will not contact any rough surfaces.

  10. Torque the fasteners.
  11. Tighten

        • Tighten the starter positive terminal to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
        • Tighten the starter solenoid terminal to 5 N·m (44 lb in).
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Connect the battery negative cable.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the battery terminal bolts to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).
