SUBJECT: Service Information for New Design Instrument Cluster Assembly with an LCD Digital Odometer
MODELS AFFECTED: Interim 1998 Saturns equipped with instrument cluster assembly with an LCD digital odometer

PURPOSE: A new design instrument cluster assembly with an LCD digital odometer has been introduced on 1998 Saturns built after mid September, 1997. This new design instrument cluster assembly contains a digital liquid crystal display (LCD) odometer as shown in the illustration.
A reset button located next to the odometer allows the operator to switch from "season" odometer mode (six digit display) to trip odometer mode (four digit display). The display can be toggled from "season" odometer to trip odometer by pressing the reset button. To reset the trip odometer to zero, select trip odometer mode, and hold the button in for one-to-two seconds.
Serviceable components of the new design instrument cluster assembly with the LCD odometer include the lens, telltale and illumination bulbs as well as the complete instrument cluster assembly. Other individual components are no longer serviceable. Service replacement instrument cluster assemblies with the LCD digital odometer are available from Saturn Service Parts Operations.
IMPORTANT: The new design instrument cluster assembly with the LCD digital odometer is not used to service 1995 - 1997 vehicles, or 1998 vehicles built with the previous design instrument cluster.
MILEAGE DETERMINATION
Service replacement instrument cluster assemblies with the LCD digital odometer require that the odometer mileage be programmed upon installation into the vehicle. For odometer programming, refer to the following procedure. The mileage set on the replacement odometer must match exactly the mileage on the odometer of the assembly being replaced. If the exact mileage cannot be determined, refer to Section 3.8.3 of the Saturn Service Policies and Procedures Manual.
LCD DIGITAL ODOMETER PROGRAMMING PROCEDURE
NOTICE: New instrument clusters with an LCD digital odometer must be programmed with the correct vehicle mileage before vehicle is driven, or a road speed is commanded by a scan tool. Once the odometer procedure is completed or the cluster detects a speed signal the mileage will be stored in memory and cannot be changed.
IMPORTANT: The programming procedure must be followed in the exact order as specified or mileage programming will not be successful. 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Remove old instrument cluster assembly and install new instrument cluster assembly. (Refer to "Instrument Panel Cluster" removal and installation procedure in the "1998 Audio System & I/P Cluster Service Manual.") 3. Reconnect negative battery cable. 4. Turn ignition switch On. 5. Select the season odometer mode (six digits displayed). 6. Press the odometer reset button and hold for 10 seconds or more, then release button. When button is released, a single "O" will appear in the right most digit. IMPORTANT: The mileage must be programmed with the highest place value being programmed first (e.g., a vehicle mileage of 5367 would have the "5" being programmed first, and the "7" last). 7. Press and release reset button (for less than one second) to increment the digit. Continue pressing and releasing reset button until desired digit is displayed. 8. When desired digit is displayed, press and hold the reset button for several seconds (but less than 10 seconds). Release the button and the digit will shift left one position with a "O" once again appearing in the right most position. 9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 until the correct vehicle mileage is set. IMPORTANT: Mileage programming procedure can be aborted by turning Off ignition and disconnecting the battery before performing step 10. 10. With the coff ect vehicle mileage displayed, for 15 seconds. When reset button is released, leading zeros will appear and gages will drop momentarily, indicating programming has been completed successfully. 11. Turn ignition Off for five or more seconds. 12. Turn ignition On and verify new mileage is correct.
