Purpose:
This bulletin provides technical information regarding a design change that occurred to the sprag clutch in automatic transaxles.
Important: For the purpose of this bulletin, the original sprag clutch (P?N 21001594) will be referred to as the 1st design sprag clutch and the new sprag clutch with plastic retainer (P/N 21003314) will be referred to as the 2nd design sprag clutch.
A design change was made to the sprag clutch assembly during the 1999 model year on vehicles built after and including VIN XZ109743. The change combined the sprag clutch and sprag clutch retainer into one component. The retainer is now a plastic component that is pre-assembled onto the sprag clutch. This 2nd design sprag clutch backservices to the 1991 moodel year. When servicing a 2nd design sprag clutch, once the component is disassembled from the 1st driven gear, discard the sprag clutch and replace with a new one. When servicing a 1st design sprag clutch, both the sprag clutch and retainer must be discarded once removed from the sprag clutch assembly and replaced with a 2nd design sprag clutch.PARTS REQUIREMENTS:
