Tools Required

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the intake manifold and spacer. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .



3. Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.



4. Remove the coolant bridge bolts.
5. Remove the coolant bridge seals.
6. Remove the upper radiator hose from the coolant pipe.



7. Remove the oil level indicator tube and coolant pipe tube bolt.
8. Remove the oil level indicator tube by pulling upwards.



9. Twist the coolant pipe to remove the front thermostat housing.
10. Remove the engine lift bracket.



11. Remove the front camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement - Left Side



12. Remove the ECM from the ECM bracket.
13. Remove the electrical grounds from the cylinder head.
14. Disconnect the oxygen sensor electrical connection.
15. Disconnect the oxygen sensor harness from the bracket.
16. Remove the rear engine lift bracket.

Caution: Ensure that the vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which the components are being removed.

17. Raise the vehicle.



18. Remove the front exhaust manifold down pipe. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Pipe Replacement .
19. Lower the vehicle.



20. Remove the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement
21. Remove the camshaft sprockets. Refer to Camshaft Drive Sprocket Replacement .



22. Remove the rear timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .




Important: The intake camshaft is marked with the letter A and the exhaust camshaft is marked with the letter E.

Important: It is not necessary to remove the intake camshaft for head bolt access.

23. Remove the exhaust camshaft. Refer to Camshaft Replacement - Left Side .
24. Install the floor jack with a block of wood under the oil pan and support the engine.
25. Remove the SA9105E .



26. Loosen the cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown.
27. Remove the cylinder head bolts.
28. Remove the cylinder head.
29. Clean and inspect the cylinder head and sealing surfaces.
30. Disassemble the cylinder head and service as necessary.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.




1. With the cylinder head assembled (except exhaust camshaft) install the exhaust manifold and a new gasket.

Tighten
Tighten the exhaust manifold nut to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

2. Install a new cylinder head gasket with the part number imprint toward the top of the engine.
3. Install the cylinder head to the engine block ensuring adequate clearance from all wires, components, etc.




Important: Use new cylinder head bolts. The required tightening method stretches the bolts to their yield point. Therefore the cylinder head bolts are not reusable.

Important: Use SA9140E (or equivalent) and the proper tightening sequence to tighten the cylinder head bolts in stages.

4. Install the new cylinder head bolts. Tighten the cylinder head bolts in the proper tightening sequence and in stages.

Tighten

1. First Pass: Tighten the cylinder head bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
2. Second Pass plus 90 degrees
3. Third Pass plus 90 degrees
4. Fourth Pass plus 90 degrees
5. Final Pass plus 15 degrees



5. Replace the 2 sealing rings on the coolant pipe if the pipe was removed earlier.
6. Lubricate the 2 sealing rings with coolant.



7. Properly position the engine lift bracket.
8. Install the coolant pipe into position and fully seat the pipe into the housing if removed earlier.
9. Install the oil level indicator tube.



10. Install the coolant pipe and engine lift bracket bolt to the cylinder head. Ensure that the bolt passes through all attached components.

Tighten
Tighten the coolant pipe/engine lift bracket bolt to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

11. Install the SA9105E to 6 Cylinder (L81) B. Refer to CELL LINK.
12. Remove the floor jack with a block of wood.
13. Install the upper radiator hose to the coolant pipe.
14. Install the upper radiator hose clamp.




Important: The intake camshaft is marked with the letter A and the exhaust camshaft is marked with the letter E.

15. Install the exhaust camshaft. Refer to Camshaft Replacement - Left Side .



16. Install the rear timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .



17. Install the camshaft sprocket. Refer to Camshaft Drive Sprocket Replacement .
18. Install the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .
19. Install the front timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Front Cover Replacement .
20. Remove the SA9105E .



21. Install the front camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement - Left Side .



22. Properly position the coolant bridge seals on the block.
23. Install the coolant bridge into position.
24. Install the coolant bridge bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the coolant bridge bolt to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).




25. Install the intake manifold spacer and tighten the bolts in sequence.

Tighten
Tighten the intake manifold spacer-to-cylinder head bolt to 16 N·m (11 lb ft).




26. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .



27. Refill the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
28. Connect the negative battery cable.

Tighten
Tighten the battery terminal bolt to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).
