This DTC tests for undesired intake manifold vacuum flow to the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System. The control module seals the EVAP system by commanding the EVAP canister purge solenoid OFF and the EVAP canister vent solenoid ON. The control module monitors the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor to determine if a vacuum is being drawn on the EVAP system. If vacuum in the EVAP system is more than a predetermined value within a predetermined time, this DTC sets.
The following table illustrates the relationship between the ON and OFF states, and the Open or Closed states of the EVAP canister purge and vent solenoid.
Control Module Command | EVAP Canister Purge | EVAP Canister Vent |
---|---|---|
ON | Open | Closed |
OFF | Closed | Open |

• | The EVAP purge solenoid is commanded OFF. |
• | The EVAP vent solenoid is commanded ON. |
• | The engine is at idle. |
• | The vehicle speed is 0 km/h (0 mph). |
• | The engine load is less than 35 percent. |
• | The ignition 1 voltage is more than 10 volts. |
• | The engine coolant temperature (ECT) at engine startup is between 4-55°C (40-131°F). |
• | The intake air temperature (IAT) is between 4-60°C (40-140°F). |
• | The long term FT cells learned (if not learned, the engine must run longer than 16 minutes and 45 seconds). |
• | The fuel level is between 6-48 L (1.6-12.7 gallons). |
• | The fuel tank pressure is between -13.5 and +6.75 mm Hg (-7.23 and 3.61 in H2O). |
DTC P0496 diagnostic runs once per ignition cycle.
The control module detects vacuum during a non-purge condition.
• | The control module illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on the second consecutive ignition cycle that the diagnostic runs and fails. |
• | The control module records the operating conditions at the time the diagnostic fails. The first time the diagnostic fails, the control module stores this information in the Failure Records. If the diagnostic reports a failure on the second consecutive ignition cycle, the control module records the operating conditions at the time of the failure. The control module writes the operating conditions to the Freeze Frame and updates the Failure Records. |
• | A current DTC Last Test Failed clears when the diagnostic runs and passes. |
• | A history DTC clears after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles, if no failures are reported by this or any other non-emission related diagnostic. |
• | Clear the DTC with a scan tool. |
• | If DTCs P0440, P0442, P0446, or P0455 are set, EVAP special functions on the scan tool will not be allowed. Clear DTCs before performing these tests. |
• | The engine control module (ECM) uses the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor to detect the vapor in the fuel tank during all parts of the EVAP diagnostic system test. Ensure the FTP sensor is not skewed by verifying FTP Sensor on the scan tool is between 1.30-1.70 volts with the ignition ON and the engine OFF. |
• | The most likely cause of DTC P0496 is a stuck open EVAP purge solenoid. Command the EVAP Purge Solenoid ON at 70 percent duty cycle with the scan tool. The solenoid should click at an even rate. Replace the solenoid if it intermittently sticks. |
